Event Description

The Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photo event, organized by the Wikimedians of Arusha, focused on improving the visual quality of Wikipedia by adding images to pages that lacked them. Participants were trained in photo uploading and proper licensing procedures, with a focus on contributing freely available and relevant images to improve Wikipedia's coverage of diverse topics. The event also included an introduction to Wikimedia Commons, the platform for storing and sharing images.

Goals

  • Expand Content Coverage:

Add relevant and high-quality images to Wikipedia pages that currently lacked them.

  • Grow and Engage the Community:

Encourage local contributors to get involved with Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons by uploading images and editing Wikipedia.

  • Strengthen Capacities:

Provide training on how to upload images to Wikimedia Commons and properly integrate them into Wikipedia articles.

  • Raise Awareness and Promote Inclusiveness:

Encourage diversity in the type of images uploaded, with a focus on underrepresented topics and communities.

  • Foster Collaboration:

Promote teamwork among participants to tackle the challenge of finding and uploading photos to articles.

Number of Participants

The event attracted 40 participants, all motivated to contribute to improving Wikipedia’s visual representation.

Event Outcomes

  • Content Creation:

104 articles were created, focusing on topics that were in need of images to enhance their visual appeal and content.

987 articles were edited, improving the quality of the pages by adding images, improving their visual presentation, and ensuring proper references.

  • Media Uploads:

14 images were successfully uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, contributing to the availability of free and open images that can be used across various Wikipedia pages.

  • Community Engagement:

Participants engaged in workshops and collaborative editing sessions, where they learned the importance of media in enriching Wikipedia articles and how to contribute images to Wikimedia Commons.

New contributors were introduced to the Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons platforms, increasing the number of active participants in the Wikimedians of Arusha community.

  • Capacity Building:

Training covered the basics of uploading images to Wikimedia Commons, how to choose appropriate media, and how to embed images correctly into Wikipedia articles.

Participants were provided with resources to continue uploading and editing after the event.

  • Inclusivity:

The event emphasized uploading images that represent diverse cultures, people, and perspectives, ensuring Wikipedia reflects a broad array of topics and voices.

Special efforts were made to encourage female participants and ensure their contributions were equally recognized.

  • Collaboration:

Participants worked together in teams to address the specific pages needing images, enhancing their collaborative skills and fostering a sense of community.

The event helped build connections among participants, promoting a shared commitment to improving Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.

Working in teams allows participants to tackle larger challenges and build lasting connections within the community.

Conclusion

The Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photo event was a great success, resulting in the creation of 104 new articles, nearly 1,000 edits, and the upload of 14 valuable images to Wikimedia Commons. It demonstrated the importance of visual media in improving the quality of Wikipedia articles and provided participants with the skills they need to continue contributing to the Wikimedia movement. The lessons learned will help ensure that the Wikimedia Community Arusha continues to grow and enhance the visual content on Wikipedia.
