Visible Wiki Women Oxford Editathon

Join Whose Knowledge? and Wikimedia UK for a Wikipedia edit-a-thon at Rhodes House to hack gender bias on the world's most visited website! Only around 1 in 10 Wikipedia editors self-identifies as female, and less than 25% of biographies on Wikipedia are about women. When women’s faces are missing from Wikipedia, their invisibility spreads both online and offline. Help us make more women visible on Wikipedia! The #VisibleWikiWomen edit-a-thon is a chance to learn how to add images to Wikimedia Commons and edit Wikipedia articles alongside experienced Wikipedia editors. It takes a multitude of us working together to tackle the skewed representation of knowledge online and build an internet that's truly by, of, and for all of us.

Join the #VisibleWikiWomen Edit-a-thon on Fri 23 November 2018!

Work lists[edit]

During the VisibleWikiWomen challenge in March-April 2018 over 800 new photos was uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. This represents a lot of articles to create, translate or improve. We are building a list of women that appear in the category VisibleWikiWomen and their respective items on Wikidata.

TAKE A LOOK AT THE WIKIDATA LIST.

This is a work in progress. You can help by finding or creating the Wikidata item of each woman, and adding it to the list.

Suggested articles[edit]

We have chosen the uploaded pictures of some prominent women who are very interesting, and whose biographies still do not exist in any version of Wikipedia.

Once you choose an article, please assign yourself on the Dashboard, to let other participants know that you are working on it. Feel free to create articles in any Wikipedia language. When you finish it, link your article in the last column, so that everyone can read it!
