PHzines Project: Documenting Independent and Underground Publishing

The PHZines Project is a collaborative initiative aimed at systematically adding, structuring, and enriching data about independently published and underground materials to Wikidata. This is in hopes of documenting texts to be used as an alternative source in literature and language teaching. This will focus on the textbooks, zines, school papers, as well as newspaper entries published in Bikol, Filipino, and Philippine English.

PHzines Project is an answer to the call for ensuring that underground and alternative publishing industries are being documented and archived properly. This further aims to give teachers and students a variety of educational resources that can be used for reading programs, English language teaching, and literary appreciation.

Culture is intricately reflected in text. With this, aside from ensuring a wide source for educational purposes, PHzines Project also captures the culture element of a literature as this covers published materials from local people, showcasing their own inputs and thought-processing.

What is a zine?

A zine (an abbreviation of "fanzine" or "magazine") is a small-circulation, non-commercial, and non-professional publication independently produced by an individual or a small collective.

These materials include, but are not limited to:

  • Zines (fanzines, perzines, political zines, art zines)
  • Small Press Chapbooks and Books (poetry, radical fiction, experimental works)
  • DIY Ephemera (cassette liner notes, self-published comics, activist flyers)
  • Underground Newspapers and Tabloids

By creating high-quality structured data, we seek to connect these publications to established knowledge graphs, making them discoverable by researchers, historians, and enthusiasts worldwide.
