Sourcing in Wikipedia : how about capturing Aural knowledge, Oral tradition? Wikipedia builds on the tradition of Encyclopedism, the collection and preservation of knowledge. However there is a profound gap between the modern (read western) methods for establishing and verifying knowledge, knowledge preservation and knowledge distribution and the traditions in (amongst others) the Arab world, and the two worlds are partly at odds. The Arab world has given the world the knowledge of the ancients, and the tradition of Mawsooa(وسوعة), it has also philosophers like Ibn Sina, Ibn Rushd and Ibn Khaldun.

Abstract ملخص

Knowledge comes in many different forms, and from many sources. Knowledge also represents content and some content might be untrue (disproven), does such the fact that some content is proven to be untrue and the proof constitute "knowledge" that requires registering and preserving, some content might be true and verified but undesirable to "the powers that be", should that undesirable knowledge be registered and preserve for posterity? There is a gap between the western approach to knowledge, about sourcing and verification, and "other" systems of collection and preservation. The ancient oriental civilisations of the Levant and Al Andalous, preserved the old knowledge of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome, they gave the world the tradition of Mawsooa(وسوعة). So what lessons do we, the contemporary Wikicommunity, have to learn to avoid the losses and mistakes of the past, and what lessons have the old masters like Ibn Sina, Ibn Rushd and Ibn Khaldoun to teach the humanity and the Arab World. Wikipedia has certain directives about sourcing material in the encyclopedia, those principles are at odds with the Wikipedia directives. The most problematic aspect is the gap between the modern ( western) written sources and the Oral tradition and Aural knowledge of the Araba world and many of its local communities. This implies that some local communities (in Morocco examples are the Amazigh-, the Saharahoui- and the Touareg-communities) and their heritage are not welcomed in the Wikipedia Encyclopedia, and that is visible in many aspect of Wikipedia. But this is true for a lot of local communities in the Arab-world and by extension in Africa, Asia, Latin-America and for the Maui and Aboriginals of the South Pacific. Modern media such as audio, video allow for the preservation of that heritage. What role can the Wikipedia community play in collecting and preserving non-written knowledge and deriving encyclopedic content thereof.
