WikiBanua
WikiBanua is an initiative of the Banjar Wikimedia Community that aims to document and enrich free knowledge about culture, history, nature, and community life in the Kalimantan region, with an initial focus on the Banua area, particularly South Kalimantan, through the Wikimedia project ecosystem.
This project is initiated and implemented by volunteers who collaborate and network with Wikimedia Indonesia, as an effort to reduce the gap in the representation of local Kalimantan knowledge in the global digital space.
Through WikiBanua activities, participants are encouraged to contribute to writing and developing articles on Wikipedia, enriching structured data on Wikidata, as well as producing and sharing open visual and media documentation on Wikimedia Commons. The topics covered include historical sites, local traditions and culture, culinary heritage, community figures, the environment, and various aspects of social life in Kalimantan.
WikiBanua is designed as an inclusive collaborative space for local communities, community activists, educators, students, and Wikimedia volunteers to jointly build free, neutral, and sustainable knowledge resources. Through training, mentoring, and field-based activities, WikiBanua seeks to strengthen the capacity of local contributors while reinforcing the free-knowledge ecosystem at the local level.
In general, WikiBanua focuses not only on content production, but also on strengthening the contributor community and improving the representation of Kalimantan within Wikimedia projects at both national and global levels.
WikiBanua has gone through three phases. The first and second phases (1.0 and 2.0) were supported by the funding program of Wikimedia Indonesia, while the third and four phase (3.0 and 4.0) are supported through the Rapid Fund of the Wikimedia Foundation.
