Event Description

WikiChallenge 2025 was a creative writing competition tailored for primary school students, designed to introduce young learners to the concepts of free knowledge, digital literacy, and storytelling on Wikimedia platforms. The event encouraged students to collaboratively write encyclopedic articles about their schools, communities, or local heroes. Supported by teachers and Wikimedia facilitators, the challenge promoted language development, civic engagement, and content creation skills among youth.

Goals

• Develop digital literacy and research skills among primary school students.

• Introduce youth to Wikimedia values through age-appropriate tools.

• Encourage storytelling and documentation of local knowledge.

• Foster collaboration between schools and Wikimedia communities.

• Build a foundation for long-term educational partnerships and early Wikimedia engagement.

46 participants from around the community.

Event Outcomes

• Content Creation:

Articles were created covering local schools, cultural festivals, historical figures, and environmental efforts.

Articles were written in Swahili and English, encouraging bilingual content development.

• Community Engagement:

Strengthened relationships between Wikimedia Community Arusha and local schools.

Students and teachers showed enthusiasm for continued participation in digital learning projects.

Parents and school administrators were invited to the closing ceremony, enhancing visibility.

• Capacity Building:

Educators gained skills in guiding students through collaborative digital projects.

Students improved their writing, fact-checking, and teamwork abilities.

Wikimedians provided ongoing mentorship and technical support.

• Youth Empowerment:

Children took pride in publishing their work online for a global audience.

The event nurtured confidence, creativity, and community pride among participants.

• Educational Partnerships:

Partnerships were initiated with 3 schools for year-round Wikimedia literacy programs.

Schools expressed interest in integrating Wikipedia concepts into their ICT curriculum.
