WikiClub Zamboanga is a WikiClub based in Zamboanga City, Philippines. Founded on January 4, 2025 by Shared Knowledge Asia Pacific (SKAP), it was established with the goal of promoting Zamboanga's history, culture, heritage, and language through various Wikimedia projects . It is the first WikiClub in Mindanao and the second to be founded by SKAP after WikiClub Cebu .

Mission

WikiClub Zamboanga aims to ensure that the histories, cultures, heritage, and languages in Zamboanga City and its neighboring areas are accessible to all. Contributing these as free knowledge through the Wikimedia projects is the main goal.

Scope

WikiClub Zamboanga will engage in a range of activities to support our Wikimedia mission:

Chavacano de Zamboanga Wikipedia: We will expand the Chavacano Wikipedia to ensure that the language is well-preserved, as well as grow the usage of Chavacano online through articles written in Chavacano.

Chavacano de Zamboanga Wiktionary: Currently in incubator, we shall develop a robust Chavacano lexicon with definitions, pronunciations, and usage examples.

Tausug Wikipedia: Currently in incubator, we will expand the Tausug Wikipedia to preserve the Tausug language and promote its usage online.

Tausug Wiktionary: Also in incubator, we shall develop the Tausug Wiktionary to create a comprehensive lexicon.

Wikimedia Commons: We will contribute images, videos, and other media of Zamboanga City, its neighboring areas, and various landmarks.

Activities

WikiClub Zamboanga successfully launched and grew the first Wikimedia community hub in Mindanao, Philippines, through a series of targeted activities in 2025. The initiative focused on building local contributor capacity, creating content about Zamboanga and Mindanao (especially underrepresented topics like local history, culture, heritage sites, and languages such as Chavacano), and fostering a sustainable editing community.

Key activities included

Pre-event planning and collaboration meetings to ensure inclusive, structured programs.

Edit-a-thon / Training of Trainers (TOT): Introduced participants to Wikipedia editing (including in Chavacano), Wiktionary contributions, Wikimedia Commons uploads, and community guidelines, empowering new editors and future facilitators.

Photo Walks: Participants documented and uploaded photos of local heritage sites, streets, and cultural spaces in Zamboanga City.

WikiNights Zamboanga: Informal, social gatherings that combined mentoring, learning, and community building to make editing accessible and less intimidating for beginners.

Post-event evaluation and reflection to identify successes and improvements.

Results and impact

Onboarded and trained new contributors who actively edited Wikipedia and uploaded media to Commons.
Produced content on local Zamboanga/Mindanao topics, filling gaps in coverage (e.g., places, history, culture, and indigenous languages).
Built a growing core group of organizers and repeat participants, enabling ongoing sustainability beyond single events.
Participants gained confidence, a stronger sense of community, and motivation to continue contributing.

Overall, WikiClub Zamboanga marked a milestone as Mindanao's first WikiClub, reviving efforts like Chavacano Wiktionary and laying the foundation for continued local open knowledge work, including partnerships (e.g., with local government) and events like Wikipedia 25 celebrations.
