WikiCollection

About the Campaign
[edit]WikiCollection is an initiative to document and structure knowledge about collectibles (coins, stamps, banknotes, medals, and more) across Wikimedia projects.
Launched in 2024 by the Wikimedia UAE and sponsored by the Million Wiki Project, WikiCollection began as a large-scale content competition on Arabic Wikipedia. Its mission is simple yet ambitious:
- Enrich Wikimedia projects with high-quality content about collectible items.
- Link Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata through structured data and templates.
- Celebrate the culture and history behind collectibles worldwide.
WikiCollection Background
[edit]The WikiCollection initiative was born from a desire to document the unique, often hidden heritage held by private collectors. It has evolved from a successful pilot into a global movement.
Origins in Arabic Wikipedia
[edit]The project launched as a local competition on Arabic Wikipedia, designed to bridge the gap between private enthusiasts and open knowledge. The impact was significant, demonstrating a high demand for structured storytelling around physical and digital collections.
Results & Impact: You can explore the detailed outcomes and community growth in our Impact Reports for 2024[1] and 2025.[2]
International Presence
[edit]In 2025, we brought this energy to the global stage at Wikimania Nairobi. By organizing the Exchange Corner, we saw firsthand how the love for collecting connects people across different cultures and languages. Read more details here.
Next Steps: Join the Global Organizing Committee
[edit]We are looking for a small group of passionate Wikimedians to co-lead the expansion of WikiCollection.
As a committee member, you will provide the vision and local expertise to help us take this initiative global. While the Wikimedia UAE core team handles the administrative heavy lifting, you will help shape the strategy.
Together, we will:
- Collaborate on rules and categories that resonate across different cultures.
- Strategize how to sync the campaign across Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Commons.
- Act as a liaison between the global project and your specific community or language group.
- Provide essential feedback on the campaign rollout, tools, and judging process.
This is a partnership: The core team provides the logistical support, while the committee provides the creative direction to ensure this campaign truly belongs to the global community.
