Abstract (maximum 500 words)

WikiPlaces: A potentially new WikiMedia project

This project will aim at delivering information related to ‘places’ in a unique format which can be very promising and useful for the generations to come. Unlike Wikipedia pages on various ‘places’ which gives information regarding history, geography, government, economy, education etc, the pages on this new Wiki Project will be more pin point and will encompass broadly the 3 following categories:

  • Events or places to visit in the given place, all round the year e.g. famous monument, amusement parks etc
  • Places which witnesses a seasonal event, unique to the place e.g. festivals, trade fairs etc
  • Events which are of ‘Once in a Blue Moon’ nature e.g. prior information on victory procession after world cup, Badminton Open Series, art exhibitions, procession for Social Causes etc

The benefits/outcomes of such a Project can be enormous:

  • Always ready and to the point authentic compilation for people looking forward to visit a new place. User can estimate the best time to visit a place and never miss out on places and events of their interest.
  • Market (just like individuals) can be immensely profited by the pre-knowledge of the events to take place in there localities and can help them build there strategies.
  • Native people can possibly be the bigger user group than just outside tourists for this Project as this can be an informative source of happenings around them.
  • Whereabouts of Campaigns and procession organised with Philanthropic and Social Campaigns at its backbone can potentially give immense strength to the same. Once introduced at a big level, the project holds the capability of serving a purpose bigger than just tourism.
  • Once properly established, the setup can also be used for commercial information like places to eat, shop, gym, club etc with all sorts of sorting options e.g. date, time, price etc making it a daily life necessity.
  • More number of users being benefited by the project always tends to increase the probability of participation of people in this and other WikiMedia Projects and also introduces the concept ‘Information sharing’ in lives of many.

Data is the processed information which will come at a cost. Since data is a product, it can be made available to some institutions at subsidised price while others will have to pay to access the same.

Open sourcing editing options for all kind of data entry can easily be misused (e.g. tweaking event dates once knowing an event around ‘xyz’ place). Hence a setup is required to data base. The information meant for general public use should be open sourced i.e. editable by general public while the one meant for market use should be close sourced (a demarcation over here will be extremely critical).
