Attendees this year will include:

  • Wikipedians who work on credibility issues.
  • Wikicred-curious Wikipedians who have been working on adjacent issues and want to get involved.
  • Those outside Wikimedia communities who work on topics that depend on Wikipedia’s sourcing, such as Internet Archive and incumbent and emerging platforms.
  • Outside researchers who work on the reliability of sources.
  • Wikimedia Foundation and Enterprise staff focus on community and credibility.
  • Technology journalists focusing on platform policy and information integrity.

A followup to WikiCredCon 2025

[edit]

This year's event is a followup to WikiCredCon 2025, which brought together volunteer editors, technologists, academics and Wikimedia Foundation staff at the Internet Archive in February 2025 to consider credibility and the Wikimedia platform.

The first WikiCredCon held at MIT in 2019 in conjunction with WikiConference North America.

What We'll Talk About in 2026

[edit]

This year we will explore the theme "Addressing Reliability in an Era of Information Erosion" in the following areas; attendees will also surface discussion topics as part of the unconferance format of WikiCredCon:

  • Improving Media Literacy: Develop educational resources and training materials that help both editors and readers critically evaluate sources and content.
  • Enhancing Citation Transparency: Explore ways to make Wikipedia’s references clearer and more transparent—whether through better citation notices or tools to independently verify sources.
  • Tackling Disinformation: Create and refine algorithms, bots, and dashboards that will help flag unreliable sources, correct misinformation, and automatically verify citation quality.
  • Empowering Editors: Build tools to help editors access and use high-quality sources, integrate databases, and streamline citation processes, including more accurate metadata and citation bot improvements.
  • Long-Term Collaboration: Work with experts in disinformation to update Wikipedia’s guidelines and best practices, particularly for contentious or highly edited topics that are vulnerable to manipulation.
