WikiCredCon 2026/Venue

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

REQUEST: If you know and love San Francisco, please help edit and refine this page.

Welcome to San Francisco! WikiCredCon 2026 will be hosted by the Internet Archive at its San Francisco HQ. San Francsico is also home to the Bay Area Wikipedians User Group, one of the largest and fastest-growing Wikimedia communities in the United States (swing by monthly meeting Thursday, April 9th from 6:30-8:30).

The Internet Archive, the venue for this year's conference, is located in the city's Richmond District. "The Richmond" stretches across northwest San Francisco between Golden Gate Park to the south, and the Presidio and Lincoln Park to the north. The western end of the Richmond is bordered by the Pacific Ocean, and is about 20 minutes by express transit bus from the Internet Archive.

The Internet Archive is just around the corner from San Francisco's "other Chinatown", on Clement Street (between Arguello Street and 25th).

Getting Around San Francisco

[edit]

BART light rail services travels from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Union Square in downtown San Francisco. It takes about thirty minutes and costs $11.55. You can now just tap on/off with a credit card when riding all transit in San Francisco.

It generally costs around $30 to take rideshare or taxi from SFO to Union Square in central San Francisco. Taxi service at SFO is actually more convenient than rideshare -- the taxi stand is located directly outside of the arrivals area at each of SFO's terminals.

Getting to the Internet Archive

[edit]

If traveling from SFO to downtown San Francisco, take the Red Line bound for Richmond (note: this is a city, and is not the same as the Richmond District) or the Yellow Line bound for Antioch.

The 38R Geary Rapid bus service travels from Union Square in downtown San Francisco to its terminus at the end of Geary Blvd. Get off at the Park Presidio stop (map link here). The Internet Archive HQ at 300 Funston Avenue, San Francisco, CA (map) is a short walk to the northeast at the corner of Funston and Clement.

Cafes and bars

Local vlogger Joey Yee has created an excellent (pre-Pandemic) video about nearby Clement Street, What To Do In San Francisco's 2nd Chinatown. (Yee also has a great video explainer about our venue, Why The Internet Archive Matters.)

Sightseeing ideas

[edit]

A short walk from the 38R bus terminus at the end of Geary Blvd is the Seal Rock Inn, where Hunter S. Thompson wrote Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 1972. If headed south from there, check out the Camera Obscura and then Sunset Dunes.

The bus stop is also close to the Sutro Baths and the Lands End trail with views of the Pacific Ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge. The Legion of Honor, a private art museum and a key setting in Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 film Vertigo is nearby. It also hosts the marker for the Western Terminus of the Lincoln Highway.

After visiting Clement Street's Green Apple Books, check out the historic City Lights Bookstore over on Columbus Avenue in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood, just northeast of Chinatown. The Beat Museum is located across the street. Musée Mécanique in Fisherman’s Wharf is a must-see for all game makers.

The Yoda Fountain is in the southeast corner of the Presidio. Walk ten minutes west to the Presidio Officers Club (open Fridays 11-4) or north to Tunnel Tops Park.

Golden Gate Park has a lot to offer just south of the Internet Archive, including the famous spontaneous Hippie Hill drum circles on Sundays until sundown.
