WikiDonne/Reports/Report 2024-2025/en
Overview
November 2024 - December 2025 was a period of growth and recognition for WikiDonne. With the belief that "a new voice, a final vowel, a feminine noun can contribute to a new way of seeing the world," we transformed this principle into concrete action.
- Volunteers who participated in our activities created nearly 10,000 entries on women's and gender knowledge in Wikipedia + Wikiquote and Wikidata items, improved about 15,000, and wrote two new wikibooks.
- Through structured educational programs—such as a university curricular internship—we trained 12 students in the master's degree program in journalism and media education.
- WikiDonne won the Open Education Award for Excellence 2025 and published a chapter in an academic volume dedicated to gender historiography in public spaces.
- WikiDonne won the Open Education Award for Excellence 2025 and published a chapter in an academic volume dedicated to gender historiography in public spaces.
This isn't just a report on our activities, but the story of how we're rewriting, one line at a time, the collective narrative on diversity in the digital space, especially gender.
Our work is structured around four strategic pillars aimed at filling a specific gap in free knowledge.
1. Create knowledge
- Bridging the gap in digital contentOur primary commitment is to actively produce knowledge to balance gender representation online and generate quality content.
🚀 Most successful campaigns
- Wiki Loves Sport: Our flagship project of the year. 67 volunteers created or improved nearly 10,000 entries and items about athletes, para-athletes, and non-binary people in 12 different languages.
- Wiki Loves Folklore Italy: An integrated approach combining text and images. In addition to the "Women and Folklore" edit-a-thon, the photo contest has enriched Commons with 700 new images on intangible cultural heritage, some recognized as featured photos and quality photos.
- SheSaid: The international campaign founded by Wiki Loves Women to enrich Wikiquote with women's voices and thoughts. This initiative has become an annual global event.
- Global collaborations: As in previous years, we participated in the Art+Feminism, CEE Women, and Wikipedia Asian Month campaigns, always bringing a gender lens to our international initiatives.
2. Educate and train
- Cultivating skills for the futureBecause we believe that empowerment comes from education, we have integrated digital skills (including knowledge of licensing, copyright, etc.), researching reliable sources, and wiki writing into official educational curricula.
📚 Structured educational projects
- Internship with Roma Tre University: A 6/8-credit academic program that combined theory (lectures and a series of 7 seminars with experts published on YouTube) and practice (writing the wikibook "History of Italian Feminism"). Winner of the Open Education Award in the Open Practices category.
- PCTO with ERT - Emilia Romagna Theater: Students from Bologna and Modena produced the wikibook "Portraits of Activism: Women Who Are Changing the World," combining historical research and current events. Nominated for the Open Education Award in the Open Assets Award category.
- PCTO in Potenza: The revision of the wikibook "Profiles of Lucanian Women," which became a cultural product featured in the Off-Calendar of the "Eredità delle Donne" festival in Florence.
3. Building community
- Strengthen networks and partnershipsThe strength of the wiki community lies in collaboration. We have established strategic partnerships and actively participated in the global Wikimedia ecosystem.
🤝 Partnerships and networks
- Institutional partners: ERT, Italian Women's Library of Bologna, VZona Association, CIDI Potenza, Equality Network, etc.
- Wikimedia Community: In-person participation at the GLAM Wiki Conference 2025 and the Wikimedia Europe Assembly, and online participation at Wikimania (where we presented some of our activities in the poster section). In addition, other affiliates or users are involved in the group's activities.
- Advocacy and Outreach: Public presentations, photography exhibitions (such as "Darkness and Light - There's Still Tomorrow"), and the launch of the book "Other Views, Other Spaces" in various cities.
4. Making an impact
- Measure the value and give value to our work.🏆 Recognitions in 2025
