WikiForAll/Training Program series-1

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

In this first cohort we shall select 25 students from Computer Science background who will commit to stay along the training program (3 months) and gain the benefits of the program.

WikiForAll program series will be a 3-month long program. This is carefully planned to ensure that the students who come from a Computer Science background shall learn about the core skills required to develop for their career and education through Wikimedia technologies and projects.

Programs

[edit]

Event 1 (February 21-22 2025)

[edit]

In this session the students were introduced to Wikimedia and sister projects. The session included basic introductions to the Internet, Web and related concepts. Hands-on training on HTML, CSS and JS were taught using real time modules and students created a webpage on their college using the concepts learned in the session. We created a new project on GitHub where everyone can merge their repositories to the main project. Doubts and questions related to configuration and coding issues were addressed and clarified for the students. As a follow up to the next session we reflected on basics of Python too. In the upcoming sessions we shall be creating practical exercises for the students to learn the fundamentals skills required to contribute on MediaWiki project.

Event 2 (March 19-20, 2025)

[edit]

In this program the students were assigned tasks from previous month training on the basics of HTML, CSS and JS. There were practising session on GitHub to get familiarised with the commands and environment. We introduced also different tools available for Wikimedia projects and how these are developed. Python Flask was also introduced in this training to make the students familiar on different web frameworks which they will apply while developing their own tools on Wiki. The 2 day event was engaged with complete technical sessions and training so that students learn and take it for practise later before they break out for Academic examinations and vacations.

Event 3 (May 15-30, 2025)

[edit]

The months of April-May the students were occupied with their Academic examinations and vacations. Despite the vacation time the students showed interest to take up virtual sessions during this time inorder to level up their skills. Therefore, we hosted online sessions and assigned few projects to the students to complete so that they can practise and understand the coding lessons taught so far. We also introduced Wikidata and how to do queries, add and retrieve the data from the Wikimedia projects.

Event 4 (June 25-27, 2025)

[edit]

Day 1
This is the final round of session for the WikiForAll series 1 of the program. On Day 1 we wrapped up the training sessions by clearing the doubts and also reviewing the tasks that were submitted over the online training sessions. Now the students have developed their skills on web-based frameworks and programming languages and also as novice contributors on Wikimedia projects. While we concluded the training session for this phase with 25 student participants, we then set the environment up for the Hackathon which happened over the next two days.

Day 2
This was the Day 1 of the 2 days Hackathon. We had a selection criteria to participate in Hackathon which included making of a simple web portfolio of their own profiles. We selected 15 students who got through the selection process. We created two tracks for participation in the Hackacthon: 1. Technical coding track and 2. Non-coding track.
1. Technical coding track - in this track the students were given instructions on the existing Wikimedia tools and projects and how to enhance these tools which were broken or not functional. Students were given a choice to work on the projects which we listed and also to choose an open project on their own. These projects were to be uploaded on the GitHub. In this track around 8 students participated.
2. Non-coding track - in this track we included the students who wanted to contribute to Wikimedia projects but were not keen about coding. These set of students contributed to Wikidata and initiated new projects too.
The Day 1 of the Hackathon began with the project selection and getting the basic elements set up for working on the projects. Mentors and trainers from community volunteer team and the Institution were present to guide the students and ensured that the student's queries were addressed.

Day 3
On the final day of the Hackathon the students continued on their projects and the atmosphere was filled with coding, debugging, correcting authentication errors, integrating APIs and vibe-coding. Followed by this in the evening the students showcased their works to the fellow students and the faculty members team from the college. The outputs showcased by the students included the coding which they did on the live Wikimedia projects and updated their works on GitHub. The non-coding track students also presented their contributions on the WikiData and other projects. The Institutional heads and the mentors were glad to see the significant progress of learning by the students. The 4 months of training phase of the series-1 of the program came to an end with declaring the winners of the Hackathon and distribution of swags and certificates to all the active participants.
