Abstract:
The session intends to discuss the opportunities, challenges, and lessons from the outcomes of the Wikipedia In Residence Program with Lagos State Government, South West Nigeria. The program is the pioneer edition of the WIR program with a government in Sub-Saharan Africa. It represents an avenue to work with major stakeholders in the Wikimedia ecosystem to support the improvement of Wikipedia and its sister projects with quality materials in art, culture, festivals, notable people, heritage, and tourism assets about Lagos. The project created a win-win relationship for the two partners, helping to digitise and improve the visibility of the state content on Wikipedia and creating more reliable and quality content for Wikipedia readers. It will help enhance capacity development and robust community engagement among members of the two parties to the contract in the country. Also, the program will attempt to provide usable guides for other Wikimedia affiliates working on similar projects or proposing going the same route. |
