WikiIndaba Steering Committee (WISCom) invites Wikimedia volunteers from the African continent and diaspora interested in identifying the next host country for the WikiIndaba Conference, and provide support to African Wikimedians to apply for two volunteer positions available at WISCom.

Background[edit]

The Wiki-Indaba Steering Committee (WISCom) is responsible for identifying the next host country and oversees the planning and organising of the WikiIndaba conference. It also provides non-financial support to all Wiki-Indaba affiliates and serves as a single voice for all Wikipedians in the continent of Africa and the diaspora who associate with Wiki-Indaba.

WISCom was established in 2018 after a consensus was reached in Tunisia to form a committee that will take custodianship of the conference in response to the repeated exhaustion of the previous conference organisers. The committee is made up of representatives from each previous Wiki-Indaba organiser, current WikiIndaba Conference Local Organising Committee (LOC), and three volunteers from the wider community.

  4. Brief Statement on your experience, skills and motivation for joining the committee: I am Eugene Makafui Masiku known in my community as Kaffzz. I serve as the Communications Officer for Open Foundation West Africa where I have been instrumental in making sure a lot of people in the sub region are introduced to the world of Wikimedia and the various projects it has to offer. Apart from working as a Comms Officer for OFWA, I have worked as a country coordinator representing Ghana for the The WikiVibrance/Africa Youth Month/2021 project. It was an exciting and inspiring moment for my team because, we exceeded the benchmark for the project. As part of my role at OFWA, I have moderated and served as the Comms Lead for a number of programs which seeks to encourage individuals from Ghana to contribute to Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Metawiki, WikiData and its other sister projects. I have lead, moderated, publicised, created content (create Metapages, youtube content, social media content etc) and organized some of these programs together with the great my team. Some of these programs are Africa Wiki Challenge 2022, Founders Day Ghana Writing Contest - Decolonizing The Internet, Wiki Afcon Hackathon 2021 ,Africa Wiki Challenge. I also have skills in organising virtual projects and events as the aforementioned programs involved online streaming during their respective launches and virtual office hours as well. During last year's Wikimania conference, I also served as an organiser where I supervised four (4) different regions in Ghana to host the Wikimania 2021 Ghana Meet Up Experience. As an individual who is passionate about Open and bringing together people to introduce them to the world of Wikimedia , I believe this committee is the perfect platform for me to diligently work with a team to implement this. It will be a pleasure to meet other liked minded individuals from across the continent to attain this feat.

I contribute to organizing many Dagbani Wikipedia projects and playing other leading roles in executing those projects. I work on several fronts such as training new users, organizing events, campaigns, and outreach services for events, and promoting debate within the Dagbani Wikimedia community for improvement. I serve on the jury team and as well as a lead coordinator for many of the Wiki loves projects for Dagbani Wikimedians User Group. I am a member of Translators Without Borders and participate in various Wikimedia translation projects from English into Dagbani. I am interested and committed to learning from and contributing to the Wikimedia Technical community. I am an activist for child rights and girl-child education. I am also a self-motivated Digital language activist interested in using various Wikimedia tools such as Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wiktionary, and any other Digital language support tools available to facilitate my language activism work on the internet.
