The Wikimedia Advocacy working group is a newly launched working group within the 2030 Wikimedia movement strategy scope. Its focus is on creating and advocating a legal framework that supports and advances free knowledge. Engaging in this area implies political involvement and raises questions such as: What does it take to make Wikimedia more influential in political and legal discussions in advancing free knowledge and access to knowledge in the world, on local, regional and global level? As an African member of this working group, I will present the purpose and the current work of the group to the conference. Then, the presentation will be adapted to the local context, by presenting the specificity of the continent (local challenges in advocacy, culture, politics), and tools that each participant/Wikimedian can use in order to advocate free knowledge in their own local community (our suggestions, ideas, available support from the Working group).
- What will attendees take away from this session?
After this presentation the attendees will have a good understanding of the 2030 Wikimedia Strategy, the Wikimedia Advocacy Working group, and how to advocate Wikimedia and free knowledge in their community using the presented tools. The attendees will also receive all the needed contact information in order to be able to receive support from the working group in case they are intending any advocacy work that needs guidance or input, or just to discuss with the group.
