Wiki Indaba Conference is the regional conference for African Wikimedians from both on the continent and in the diaspora. The first edition was held in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2014 by Wikimedia ZA. In 2017 the conference moved to Accra, Ghana, and was organized by Open Foundation West Africa. The 2018 edition was held in Tunis, Tunisia by Wikimedia TN Usergroup, while the Wikimedia UG Nigeria arranged the 2019 in the federal capital, Abuja, FCT. The 2020 edition of the conference was supposed to be held in Kampala, Uganda but was postponed and became a virtual event hosted in 2021 by the Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda. The 2022 edition took place in Kigali, Rwanda, and was hosted by The Wikimedia Community User Group Rwanda. In 2023, it took place in Agadir, Morocco, and was hosted by the Wikimedia Morocco User Group. The last edition, which took place in 2024, marking the 8th edition and 10th year anniversary of the conference, took place in Johannesburg, South Africa, and was organized by Wikimedia ZA under the theme "!ke e: /xarra //ke," which means "United in diversity".
The 9th edition, WikiIndaba Conference 2025, was planned to be hosted by the Wikimedia Community User Group Tanzania in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, under the theme "Tuungane na Tukue Pamoja!", which means "Let's unite and grow together!". However, due to the electoral situation in Tanzania, the conference was relocated to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Unfortunately, because of the armed conflict in Goma, the conference could not take place.
Looking ahead, the 10th edition of the WikiIndaba Conference will be held in 2026 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, and will be organized by Wikimedia Community User Group Côte d'Ivoire. This milestone edition will once again bring together African Wikimedians to strengthen collaboration, celebrate diversity, and advance free knowledge across the continent and the diaspora.
