• Regarding the current applicants for technical editors, while they do not have all of the technical abilities specified in Role details » Additional tasks and on our Technical wishlist, I am heartened by the enthusiasm exhibited by the students who applied. (Thank you Eric Youngstrom for encouraging students to become involved.) I look forward to hearing others’ thoughts on the call, but at least initially, a candidate such as Cody naccarato would likely help us a lot as a technical editor. • Wikidata, openness and transparency
  • Academic authors who are new to Wikipedia like that all phases of the process from manuscript submission through publication are documented, which ensures that potentially important details do not evaporate (as is often the case with traditional scholarly publication). Several differences from traditional journals -- also interesting with the rejected and stall manuscripts having those [Eric Youngstrom]
  • Wikidata expertise is becoming increasingly important for us. Alaa Najjar has extensive Wikidata experience and knowledge.
  • Wikidata allows us to ask faceted questions (e.g. does time to publication in wikijournals differ for articles written by authors based on the global south?)
  • There has been some recent writing on the lack of diversity in publishing along with recommendations to include some additional demographics about authors (racial, gender identity, etc). Discussion ensued. Complex situation that deserves ongoing thought and discussion.

  • Key dates:
    • Initial draft deadline: 1 February 2021
    • Feedback from WMF: 1 March 2021
    • Final deadline: 1 April 2021
    • Decision made: during April 2021
    • Funding if successful: June 2021
  • Assistance requested for developing sections:
    • ‘Annual plan’
    • ‘Strategic plan’
  • Suggestions welcomed for items to include in:
    • Budget items (subscriptions, services, activities, conferences?)
    • Staffing (techincal editors tasks, tool developer tasks. project manager? outreach officer? Other roles?)
      • WMF suggests first time grantees generally request maximum of one full time staff time: Can be split to multiple part-time roles, or shorter contracts.

• Technical editors (current applicants)
  • Technical tasks to make sure processes run smoothly and free up time for editorial boards for content & strategy based work
  • paid positions, hourly rate, in budget for 40 hours per week.
  • Can have more than one technical editor (max number?).
    • Estimate 4-6 hours of total work per week (possible expansion as journals grow)
    • Would allow tech eds to split how they like (specialise to tasks, roster by week, completely flexible etc)
  • Might want to have a lead technical editor in the future (coordinate and onboard new editors)
  • Thomas will do initial onboarding. Others called on to assist (see action items) We might want to consider mentors for these technical editors.

• Proposal for new WikiJournal of WikiJournal of Psychology, Psychiatry, and the Behavioral Sciences
  • Proposed new journal with slightly more specialised scope
  • Eric and Robert have got agreement from potential editors and a set of possible submissions (list below)
    • Several submission would be companion articles to book chapters from Assessment of Disorders in Childhood and Adolescence
  • Question: how are other journals / journal groups with both broad and specialised scopes organised? Two examples at opposite ends:
    • Nature publishing group publishes the broad flagship Nature as well as separate specialist journals with independent editorial boards, etc
    • F1000research takes opposite approach, with only single journal but submission tagged to ‘collections’ filtered off to different subsections of the large editorial board
    • Functionally similar, but journal names still seem to matter for submitting authors
  • For psych, a significant benefit of a separate journal is the name/identity: psychologists and psychiatrists don;t typically submit to or read medical journals (reputation is that those are for surgery & internal medicine etc) so separate named journal can attract contributions from ppl who’d otherwise not think to.
  • Main risk: journal loses steam and stalls (see earlier proposals for Journal scientifique libre and WikiJournal of Business and Economics that fizzled)
    • Number of agreed editors and starting authors bodes very well
    • At the very least, can test for a year
  • Would submitting authors be satisfied with lack of scopus indexing for at least a year? (scopus requires >30 articles and >1 year of publishing history, then takes 6-9 months for decision)
    • Authors aware that is startup journal
    • The pitch to authors has focused on leadership and OA (rare in psych), especially with co-publishing model of book chapters
    • Believe that high impact factor is likely eventually (though not the priority)
