WikiLatinos

WikiLatinos
[edit]WikiLatinos is a proposed Wikimedia user group that aims to increase awareness, participation, and representation of Latino and Hispanic culture, heritage, communities, and individuals across Wikimedia projects. This group is intended to bring together contributors defined themselves as Latinos or Hispanic (see shared definition) and also individuals from Latin America, the Latino diaspora, and allies interested in improving and expanding content related to Latino experiences.
Latino representation, especially within the English and Spanish Wikipedia remains limited. Much of Latino history, culture, and notable figures are either underrepresented or absent entirely. There is a need for a coordinated effort to fill these gaps, support contributors, and promote culturally relevant and accurate content across languages.
Background
[edit]This user group builds upon earlier efforts such as the WikiProject Latinos and Wikiproyecto:Cultura y Herencia Latina on the Spanish Wikipedia, which sought to improve coverage of Latino-related topics. While that project made important strides, a broader, multilingual and community-driven initiative is necessary to meet the scale of the challenge and opportunity.
Goals
[edit]- Expand and improve Wikimedia content about Latino and Hispanic cultures, people, history, and issues across all languages.
- Support and connect contributors from Latino communities and the diaspora.
- Organize edit-a-thons, workshops, and community-building events.
- Collaborate with educational and cultural institutions.
- Advocate for inclusive content practices that reflect the diversity within Latino identities.
Activities
[edit]Proposed and future activities may include:
- Thematic editing campaigns (e.g., Latino Heritage Month)
- Bilingual or multilingual courses
- Partnerships with GLAM institutions
- Training and mentorship for new editors
- Research and documentation on content gaps
