WikiMed Africa
[edit]WikiMed Africa is an initiative dedicated to improving access to reliable, high-quality, and culturally relevant medical and health information about Africa on Wikimedia platforms, including Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, and other Wikimedia projects. The project brings together medical professionals, students, open-knowledge advocates, and community volunteers to bridge critical gaps in online health information for African audiences.
Mission
[edit]To curate and expand open medical knowledge about Africa on Wikimedia projects, translate health content into African languages, promotes digital health literacy, empower contributors to create and maintain accurate information, strengthen collaboration with health institutions, and address critical health information gaps.
Vision
[edit]To build a continent where every African has free, equitable, and reliable access to contribute and consume high-quality medical and health information in languages they understand, empowering healthier communities and informed decision-making.
Scope and Focus Areas
[edit]Our scope includes:
- Public health in Africa, including communicable and non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health, nutrition, mental health, and environmental health
- Diseases and conditions prevalent in Africa, especially those that are underrepresented or poorly documented
- Multilingual health content, including translations into African languages
- Medical and health systems in African countries (policies, institutions, primary healthcare, community health)
- Biographies of African health professionals, researchers, and public health leaders
- Medical images and media related to African health contexts on Wikimedia Commons
What We Do

[edit]- Organizing edit-a-thons, workshops, and webinars for medical students, health professionals, librarians, and community volunteers
- Providing skills training on Wikipedia medical editing, reliable referencing, Wikidata modeling, and open-license media contribution
- Offering mentorship and community support for new and experienced contributors interested in health and medicine topics
Content Creation & Improvement
[edit]- Expanding and improving Africa-focused health and medical articles on Wikipedia
- Structuring, improving, and standardizing medical data, infoboxes, indicators, and references on Wikidata
- Digitizing, proofreading, and improving public-domain medical materials on Wikisource
- Uploading medical images, illustrations, audio, and videos to Wikimedia Commons under open licenses
Language & Localization

- Supporting community-led projects that localize health information for underserved and underrepresented language communities
Partnerships & Outreach
[edit]- Collaborating with universities, medical schools, teaching hospitals, libraries, and public health institutions
- Working with NGOs and government agencies to strengthen open and reliable digital health knowledge ecosystems
- Hosting and supporting community health campaigns aligned with global health observances such as World AIDS Day, World Cancer Day, and Rare Diseases Day
Research & Knowledge Equity
