The first WIR activity happened in 2021 in English. Since then, we have been working in 4 languages.

In 2024, for example, WIR worked on

  • 375 articles on the English Wikipedia
  • 216 articles on the French
  • 304 articles on the Spanish
  • 310 articles on the Arabic

From 2021 till June 2025, we have edited 759 pages on the English Wikipedia, which are viewed on average 37 million times per month [1]

Many of the articles we work on are rather « expert level » on IP topics, such as Article 6ter, Intangible asset finance or Patent opposition proceedings.

As another example, text from the WIPO publications Understanding Industrial Property and Understanding Copyright and Related Rights were used to create the English Wikipedia article Industrial property which was read over 12,000 times in 2017.

We are also frequently adding images on Wikimedia Commons. In 2024, we worked on 47 photos and graphics uploaded to Commons (all uploads by Anthere, all uploads by Salvador). Many illustrate Wikipedia articles. For example, this graphic illustrates the article about World Intellectual Property Report in 4 languages.

Another area of activity related to Wikidata. In 2024, we created 93 Wikidata entries, focusing on publications. The 2024 improvements concerned the entries related to  GII report, WIPR report, WIPI report, WIPO magazine, Green Technology book, PCT Yearly Review and Madrid Yearly Review.

About WIPO's residence

WIPO is producing a huge amount of specialist knowledge that can be shared on Wikipedia, which benefits Wikipedia and increases the audience WIPO reaches. Sharing content with Wikipedia is simple for WIPO because its publications (and its website since mid 2022) are already licensed under Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY).

The initiative is spear-headed by Charlotte Beauchamp, head of Publications and Design Section. WIPO has previously worked with three other Wikipedian in Residence:

  • John Cummings, mid 2021, over three months
  • Isla Haddow-Flood and Sherry Antoine, end of 2021, over two months

The objective of 2022 was for one experienced Wikipedian Florence Devouard to collaborate with teams of WIPO experts to improve and develop content in WIPO's fields of expertise on Wikimedia projects, within Wikimedia's rules and guidelines, over a longer and more stable timeframe, for long lasting benefits.

In 2023, the team decided expand the scope of the project to another UN official language: Spanish, the second language in the world with more native speakers. That is how Salvador Alcántar, from Mexico was invited to be Wikipedian on Residence. This experience motivated to try another extra language: Arabic, and in 2024, Mervat Salman, from Jordan, was invited to join the team.

The project is meant to

  • create new or edit existing articles on Wikipedia (and Wikidata) by adding expert information, knowledge, data, and statistics from WIPO publications and resources, as well as
  • create opportunities for WIPO staff to better understand the Wikimedia projects and ecosystem for a long lasting mutually beneficial relationship.
