As an effort to preserve and provide open access to knowledge regarding Indonesia's Spice Route heritage, WikiRempah stands as a dedicated initiative to document the rich history of the archipelago, particularly in Eastern Indonesia. This region holds a deep history with high-value spices, such as cloves and nutmeg, which served as the primary drivers of maritime civilization and global trade, drawing merchants from all corners of the world.

The core of this Spice Route dynamic was centered in the Moluccas. The term "Maluku" originally referred to the four sultanates of North Maluku: Ternate, Tidore, Bacan, and Jailolo (also Morotai). A specific confederation among these four kingdoms, which likely emerged in the 14th century, was called Moloku Kie Raha or the "Four Mountains of Maluku." This region was originally the domain of the four largest Islamic kingdoms in eastern Indonesia, collectively known as the Moloku Kie Raha Sultanate (Sultanate of the Four Mountains in Maluku).

Beyond forging a political alliance, a key outcome of their historical assembly was the standardization of royal institutional frameworks across Maluku. Because this assembly was attended by the four most powerful kings of Maluku, it became widely recognized as the Moloku Kie Raha alliance. The political strength and rich spice resources of Moloku Kie Raha formed a profound cultural heritage and historical footprint that WikiRempah actively documents today.

WikiRempah is an initiative dedicated to preserving knowledge through documentation and open access to information related to the Spice Route heritage in Indonesia, particularly in Eastern Indonesia. The initiative focuses on preserving and disseminating knowledge about Indonesia’s Spice Route heritage through Wikimedia platforms, including Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, Wikidata, and Wiktionary.

As part of its community development efforts, WikiRempah extends beyond supporting existing Wikimedia communities, such as organizing meetups and editing activities in Makassar, Gorontalo, and Manado. The initiative actively promotes inclusivity by reaching out to regions that lack established communities, whether they have existing active contributors or no Wikimedia presence at all. Through introductory Wikipedia editing workshops and community gatherings, WikiRempah engages local youth in North Maluku, training to equip them with editing skills, encourage local participation, and foster new generations of Wikimedia contributors across the region.

5 Pillars of WikiRempah

[edit]
  1. History: Exploring historical records, archaeological sites, and ports, as well as architectural remnants—such as fortresses and ancient trading hubs—that stand as silent witnesses to cross-cultural exchange.
  2. Arts and Culture: Showcasing aesthetic expressions—including literature, music, dance, theater, and oral traditions—inspired by the dynamic life along the Spice Routes.
  3. Culinary Traditions: Examining food preparation traditions and the rich flavors of traditional Indonesian cuisine, which emerged and evolved through the use of local spices.
  4. Traditional Remedies: Studying traditional healing practices, "jamu" (herbal medicine), herbal concoctions, and spice-based wellness cultures dedicated to health.
  5. Crafts and Textiles (wastra): Discussing handicrafts, artisanal crafts, and traditional textiles (fashion) that reflect the unique identities and cultural intersections of each region.

Goals

[edit]

Through field documentation and collaboration with local communities, WikiRempah seeks to address the scarcity of open-licensed documentation concerning cultural heritage sites in Eastern Indonesia. In addition to generating reusable knowledge assets, the initiative aims to build the capacity of local contributors and foster the sustainability of Wikimedia communities in regions that remain underrepresented in the digital knowledge sphere.
