WikiTechMa — Wikimedia Morocco Technical Initiative
WikiTechMa, short for Wikimedia Technology Morocco, was launched in 2023 by the Wikimedia MA User Group to address the growing need for technical capacity within Wikimedia projects in Moroccan languages.
Born from community challenges around maintaining templates, creating structured content, and contributing to underrepresented language wikis (like Darija and Standard Moroccan Tamazight), the initiative started as a grassroots movement focused on:
- Automating content creation through bots
- Improving documentation
- Training contributors in Lua, SPARQL, and bot development
The program has grown into a structured, multi-year effort supporting both local development and global Wikimedia tech infrastructure.
Mission
[edit]The mission of WikiTechMa is to:
Empower Moroccan contributors to build, maintain, and expand Wikimedia projects through open-source technologies, localized tools, and technical collaboration in their native languages.
This includes making Wikimedia more accessible, sustainable, and relevant to Morocco’s linguistic and cultural diversity.
Goals
[edit]By 2026, WikiTechMa aims to:
- Boost technical skills in the Moroccan Wikimedia community through trainings and resources
- Automate repetitive tasks via scalable bots and tools
- Localize core technologies such as MediaWiki, templates, modules, and mobile apps into Darija and Tamazight
- Create structured, high-quality content with a focus on geography, biographies, and local knowledge
- Prepare and organize Morocco’s third Wikimedia Hackathon (2026)
