[edit]ESEAP Strategy Summit Manila 2025: In Brief
[edit]
- Source: Imelda, Wikimedia Diff, May 2026
- Summary: The East, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific (ESEAP) Wikimedia Community reached a defining milestone as delegates gathered in Manila, Philippines, for the ESEAP Strategy Summit 2025. Led by Wiki Advocates Philippines and supported by other local user groups, the Summit was held from May 23 to 25, marking a decisive shift from conceptualizing our regional future to active implementation. Driven by this proactive goal, the gathering fostered deep regional solidarity as participants co-created the governance, strategy, and advocacy roadmaps required to transition the ESEAP Hub from theory into a living reality.
- As the Summit was intentionally positioned as a high-level strategic gathering, its primary objective was to move beyond general networking and focus on the governance of the ESEAP Hub and the future of the Movement Strategy in our region.
- The core success of the Summit lay in its ability to bridge high-level strategy with actionable, on-the-ground initiatives. The âHUB, Action!â sessions served as the foundational pillar of the event, successfully delivering on the objective to provide a dedicated avenue for regional strategic discussions and the creation of the ESEAP Hub. Participants engaged deeply in mapping a governance system, with sessions on âLandscaping Global and ESEAP Regulatory Trends for Advocacyâ and âCollective Advocacy Actionsâ emerging as critical points of interest. These discussions underscored a powerful theme: the successful link between regional goals and local implementation. Attendees reported gaining a clearer understanding of how these high-level frameworks directly empower their individual affiliate work and grassroots initiatives. Read More Here
Furthering Together: WAP celebrates Wikipedia @ 25
[edit]
- Source:Allen Marx 12, Wikimedia Diff, January 2026
- Summary: On January 23, 2026, contributors and volunteers of Wiki Advocates Philippines met and joined the global celebration of Wikipediaâs 25th Birthday. The event was an avenue to rekindle and reinforce stronger relationships by both the new and continuing contributors. Acknowledging the role of Wikipedia in furthering the desire of a freer knowledge available to all, volunteers met at Smigrita, a pizza parlor in Naga City, to use and talk about WikiCommons Explorer Tool and read some sample zines which are to be documented under the PHZines project.
- Introduced in my last Diff article, the WikiCommons Explorer is a delineator-like tool that helps users to find resources available to WikiCommons easier and faster in just a matter of seconds. As they appreciate the ease of navigation, volunteers (@littletomboy) and (@Itronomethia) willingly shared this feature to their personal accounts. Definitely, a moment of joy and reminisce as they appreciate both the tool and the photos. Read More Here

Celebrating 13th Wikidata Day â the Wiki Advocates Philippines Way: Sharing of PHZines Project
[edit]
- Source:Allen Marx 12, Wikimedia Diff, November 2025
- Summary: Warm, Adventurous, and Productive. These words encapsulate what just happened last October 31 as the Wiki Advocates Philippines hosted a localized celebration of Wikidataâs 13th day!
- It has been a year since I was immersed in Wikidata. I learned and appreciated much of it from the same celebration we had last year to the point that my first 1000 edits were of this particular project in Wikimedia. In 2024, amidst the disturbance of Typhoon Kirstine, we were also able to celebrate, meet-up, and collaborate on Wikidataâs 12th birthday and conduct an edit-a-thon for three days.
- For this year, moreover, composed of more than 15 new volunteers, and 8 members, we are happy to share that we have launched local projects as well as conduct lexeme edits in Wikidata. Named as WikiBridges, and PHZines Project, these local projects, involves structuring data, and archiving important bridges as well as zines (small, self-published magazines). Read More Here

- Source: Anthony Diaz, Wikimedia Diff, August 2025
- Summary: This yearâs Wikimania in Nairobi is another success, looking at the number of participants who have attended both in-person and online and the variety of presentations from different communities. Although we may not have been able to be present in person and meet some of our old-time friends or mingle with new participants, our virtual attendance at this yearâs conference has provided a wealth of knowledge and a renewed sense of purpose. Volunteers of our group have attended several sessions to gather insights from different communities and apply them to our local context. Here are some of the key takeaways and our plans for the future. Read More Here
Art+Feminism in the Philippines 2025: Documenting the Capalonga Women Bamboo Weavers
[edit]
- Source: Anthony Diaz, Wikimedia Diff, June 2025
- Summary: A group of women in Capalonga are preserving their cultural heritage through the art of bamboo weaving through the Kapalong Handicrafts Home Decor and Furniture. The Capalonga Women Bamboo Weavers are skilled artisans who have been passing down their knowledge and techniques to women in the community who are interested in learning the art, creating beautiful and functional handicrafts that showcase their communityâs rich traditions. Last March 8, 2025, the Wiki Advocates Philippines User Group traveled to Sitio Lumok, Brgy. Camagsaan, Capalonga, Camarines Norte, to witness how these women transform thin bamboo strips into amazing handicrafts and hear about their personal stories about struggles and triumphs being in the womenâs workforce. Through the efforts of Mr. Abner Aler, we were introduced to this group of Capalonga women and were granted permission to document their work.
- Bamboo weaving is an intricate process that requires great skill and patience. The Capalonga Women Bamboo Weavers begin by selecting and preparing the bamboo strips, which are then woven together to create a variety of products, including baskets, mats, and decorative items. These strips are exposed to direct sunlight and colored with different inks to produce distinct designs. The women are still using traditional tools such as bolos, knives, and hammers. Each piece is a testament to the weaversâ craftsmanship and attention to detail. Read More Here
Connection and Longing In Between: Takeaways from the Wikimedia Youth Conference in Prague 2025
[edit]
- Source: MaxixKatana, Wikimedia Diff. June 2025
- Summary: From all around the globe, we arrived at this conference carrying many languages, ideas, and cultures. But what brought us together was our shared desire for change, for connection, and for sharing free knowledge with people who believe in the same goal as we do. That alone made us more similar than we first realized. This experience showed me how essential connection is, though I really donât like that word because it indicates power, but somehow we need it, in a good way, especially when you find yourself in an unfamiliar placeâaway from your family, your comfort zone, surrounded by new ideas, foreign people and tastes of food, diverse perspectives, and people eager to share and learn. It reminded me that even when you feel small or uncertain, being part of something bigger can give you the courage to grow. You just have to trust your capability that you can do bigger than your size, and that will begin with one small step of courage. We donât often hear this kind of word, but we all need it. You in YOUth: Lessons from Wikimedia Youth Conference 2025
[edit]
- Source: Allen Marx 12, Wikimedia Diff, June 2025
- Summary: YOU will always be a part of the YOUth. It can be a fancy word play but I think everyone, regardless of their status as well as background, have been in the spirit of the youth. What I mean by being part of the youth is, we have similar problems, and challenges we dealt with in the community, but hereâs the catch: we can also solve these together. The first of its kind, Wikimedia Youth Conference 2025, is a fusion of both empowerment as well as finding solutions workshops. But instead of feeling it like the usual set-up of sharing from a speaker and thinking afterwards, it was done in a way that everyoneâs situation is considered. A more inductive approachâspeaking first of what you feel and think, before generating results. And what does this mean: being âyouâ. More than what data implies is the context as to why youngsters are being limited in the movement. From this, it gives everyone an opportunity to rethink why we do things the way we do. [edit]Wikidata 12th Birthday Celebration in the Philippines
[edit]
- Source: Anthony Diaz, Wikimedia Diff, November 2024
- Summary: The Wiki Advocates Philippines User Group has joined the global community of Wikidata editors in celebrating its 12th birthday from October 26, 2024 to November 3, 2024. A 5-day event was conducted in the learning hub, including Wikidata editing sessions, basic training for newbies, exploring possibilities of lexemes, and fun interactive games. This celebration was made possible with Wikimedia Deutschlandâs support for different communities and affiliates who wanted to organize celebration events.
- As a group, this was the first time we held an edit-a-thon for Wikidata, although some of our volunteers have already started to edit individually based on their interests and capacity. Imelda Brazal started editing as early as 2020 during the 1Lib1Ref campaign, together with other librarians. Anthony has also worked on Wikidata lexemes, transferring the word entries on the Central Bikol Wiktionary to Wikidata. The call for organizers was a good opportunity for the team to make extra effort and time working with this project and also introducing it to newbies. Read More Here
Hope Amidst Typhoon Kristine: Wiki Advocates PH Relief Efforts
[edit]
- Source: Anthony Diaz, Wikimedia Diff, November 2024
- Summary: The Maharlika Highway, the nearest main road to our learning hub, has been inaccessible due to the heavy rains that Typhoon Kristine delivered to the Bicol Region. One of the areas that has been severely impacted is San Fernando, Camarines Sur. As a result of the flooded highways leading to the downtown area of Naga City, passengers of buses, private cars, and delivery trucks have been left stranded. As a means of responding to this disaster, Wiki Advocates Philippines initiated a two-day donation drive to provide food packs and bottled water to stranded passengers. Together with our community members, our learning hub prepared meals and donations during the two-day donation drive. We may not have been able to reach other flooded areas, such as Camaligan, Gainza, Milaor, and the Rinconada area, but we hoped that we had inspired others to make the same efforts. Read More Here
ESEAP Conference 2024 Experience
[edit]
- Source: Anthony Diaz, Wikimedia Diff, June 2024
- Summary: This should have been my second time attending the ESEAP conference if not for the circumstances when I was about to board a plane for Australia in 2023. That event may have devastated me at first. Still, after a year of working again with my affiliate and with some of my regular functions as one of the grants committees for the ESEAP region and also a Letâs Connect Liaison for the ESEAP, I have thought that occasions such as this are the best time to build linkages among other Wikimedians. The ESEAP conference 2024 took place in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, on May 10-12, 2024, with a theme of Collaboration beyond the horizon. It was made possible through the efforts of Wikimedia Community User Group Malaysia, the volunteers of the ESEAP Community and the Wikimedia Foundation. Read More Here
Central Bikol Wiktionary through the years
[edit]
- Source: Anthony Diaz, Wikimedia Diff, February 2024
- Summary: The Central Bikol Wiktionary celebrated its third birthday on January 13, 2024! Narrating the story of the Central Bikol Wiktionary is the same as with any language request on Wikimedia Incubator: requesting the project, developing it, until such time itâs ready to be hatched. But the highlight of this story would be during its 13th year. Itâs one of the many projects in numerous languages that have been requested for creation, but after several attempts to sustain the editing activity, the interest dwindles. It was in 2019 that one of the founders of Wiki Advocates Philippines User Group, Imelda, took the initial steps of repairing the project, creating templates and modules, and itâs an interesting fact that sheâd used the Spanish Wiktionary as a source guide. The commonality in the language must have been the reason. Read More Here

We aimed to provide an avenue for women and youth to cultivate care and love for themselves, other human beings, and our environment through awareness, freedom, equality, and justice for all. WikiDunong: EduWiki Initiatives in the Philippines Project
[edit]
- Source: Imelda Brazal &Anthony Diaz, Wikimedia Diff, November 2023
- Summary: There is an abundance of available resources online for consumption by both teachers and students, but due to the scarcity of fact-checking, misinformation is rampant and usually leads to learners having the wrong information. The group, being editors themselves in several wikiprojects, aims to provide sessions that would guide users of Wikiprojects, particularly Wikipedia, on how to maximize and utilize this; thus, we initiated the WikiDunong Program.
- The User Group believes that through training and workshops on promoting Media and Information Literacy Skills in schools and non-formal set-ups, through youth organizations, members of the community will be able to include these wikiprojects in their learning experience, thus also promoting the value of co-creation, collaboration, and volunteerism as editors, contributors, and volunteers. [edit]Hatch-A-Wiki Project of the Wiki Advocates Philippines
[edit]
- Source: Anthony Diaz, Wikimedia Diff, August 2022
- Summary: Hatch-A-Wiki Project started from the idea of getting the Central Bikol Wiktionary its own space last 2019. Back then, it was thirteen years on incubator status. Imelda, a co-founder of Wiki Advocates Philippines, has become interested in that one stagnating project in Wikimedia Incubator. Later, she will be coining the term âHatch-A-Wikiâ for all the projects the group plans to work on in the incubator. MaroBos, a long-time volunteer, pioneered the project in June 2021. The word hatch is equivalent to the Central Bikol word âHimsa,â or that certain period the egg shells crack, and later on, the newly-hatched chick will see the first light of this world. That is how the group foresees every incubator project on local languages will do in the long run. Read More Here

The Art and Feminism in the Philippines as a part of this initiative has officially launched this yearâs campaign at Raul S. Roco Library. This is the third time the Philippines will be joining the international campaign and we are looking at a more revamped and structured event through the collaboration of Wiki Advocates Philippines with the leadership of one of the Network Organizers of Art and Feminism. The kick-off event was attended by two community organizers, Imelda R. Brazil and Anthony B. Diaz, along with the local volunteers. Editors have created draft articles on Wikifundi, by way of a Kiwix device and have utilized the library references and resources in search of quotations from notable women, not only in the Philippines but all around the globe. Previously, the group has also interviewed several women in different fields and walks of life to answer the question, âSain mo nahihiling an babayi bilang parte kan sarong sosyodad?â or "Where do you see the woman as part of a society?"
