Wiki Advocates Philippines User Group

Also known as Wiki Advocates Philippines, Inc. (WAP) is a legally registered non-profit organization and a recognized Wikimedia affiliate based in the Philippines. Active as a community since 2020 and formally recognized as a user group in 2023, the user group is dedicated to bridging the information poverty gap and promoting free, open knowledge in the country. Wiki Advocates Philippines channels Wikimedia Movement advocacies to diverse civil societies throughout the Philippines and the broader East, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific (ESEAP) Region. The organization's work focuses on access to quality education, equal gender representation, human rights advocacy, language and culture preservation, and inclusive technology for a sustainable future.

Language Preservation & Promotion (Salbar Tataramon)

Wiki Advocates Philippines implements the Salbar Tataramon (Save the Language) program to document, preserve, and revitalize indigenous and regional languages of the Philippines on Wikimedia platforms:

  • SUYAT Tool & Baybayin Transliteration Gadget: Pioneer digital tools that integrate ancient pre-colonial Philippine scripts (such as Baybayin, Hanunó'o, Buhid, and Tagbanwa) into modern platforms. WAP deployed a user-friendly transliteration tool and on-screen keyboard on the Central Bikol Wiktionary, ensuring ancient scripts remain accessible in contemporary digital spaces.

It serves as an active co-learning space, a venue for volunteer edit-a-thons, and a base for the Hatch-A-Wikimedian Internship Program— a structured leadership development initiative that equips volunteers to become independent movement organizers.
