Event Overview

[edit]

On 30th August, the Wiki Club AMU, organised an insightful workshop on the theme Understanding Wikipedia Inclusivity Criteria The session was moderated by shzshb (Club Lead), and the speaker was Aafi, the Strategic Advisor of the Club, who guided participants about how Wikipedia functions as an open knowledge platform. The workshop brought together 20 enthusiastic participants. Aafi introduced the five pillars of Wikipedia, the foundational principles that shape its content and community. From neutrality and verifiability to free accessibility, these pillars became the entry point into deeper discussions on what qualifies as notable in the world of Wikipedia. The highlight of the workshop was the exploration of Wikipedia’s notability criteria, examining how and why certain topics, people, or events are considered worthy of their own page. Terms like presumed notability, GNG, and SNG were broken down in simple terms. The conversation here became both technical and reflective. To make the process more accessible, Aafi also introduced the Article Wizard, a step-by-step tool designed to help new contributors draft and submit Wikipedia articles. By the end of the workshop, participants not only understood the mechanics of Wikipedia but also walked away with a broader awareness of its inclusivity challenges. Between these technical intricacies, coffee and sandwiches were exchanged alongside knowledge amongst the attendees. Before wrapping up, there was a short demonstration on how to create a Wikipedia account. The session then ended with an open Q&A, where students shared their thoughts on how Wikipedia shapes knowledge and how each of us can play a part in making it more inclusive.
