Overview

[edit]

The Workshop on Feminism and Folklore 2026 was successfully conducted on 21st March 2026 in Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh, India, organised by Wiki Club SATI as part of the global Feminism and Folklore campaign.

The workshop brought together 21 first-time Wikipedia contributors for a full day of hands-on editing, focused on documenting the lives of women in Indian folklore, regional traditions, and cultural heritage — stories that have long been absent from Wikipedia. By the end of the day, participants had collectively created more then 20 new Wikipedia articles on women, making a tangible contribution to bridging the gender content gap on Wikimedia platforms.

How the Day Unfolded

[edit]

The workshop ran from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM (IST) and was divided into structured sessions designed to take complete beginners from zero to publishing their first Wikipedia article.

The day opened with a warm welcome by organiser Aanchal Patel, who introduced participants to the Wikimedia ecosystem and the significance of the Feminism and Folklore campaign. She highlighted how women across all walks of life from folk traditions and regional culture to science, art, and everyday history remain drastically underrepresented on Wikipedia, and how each article created that day would be a step towards changing that.

Suyash Dwivedi, an experienced Wikimedian, then led an in-depth session on Wikipedia's core policies notability, reliable sources, neutral point of view, and wiki markup equipping participants with the foundational knowledge needed to write their first articles.

Riddhi Sharma spoke on the deeper significance of documenting women in folklore, drawing attention to the role of regional languages and oral traditions in cultural memory, and why it is important to preserve these stories on a global platform like Wikipedia.

Following the sessions, participants moved into an extended hands-on editing period writing, referencing, and publishing new articles on women with mentor support. The afternoon session included an introduction to Wikimedia Commons, where participants learned to upload and categorise images and media files.

Lunch was provided for all attendees, giving the group a chance to connect informally. The event concluded on a celebratory note with a cake cutting ceremony, bringing the entire team together in a joyful and memorable close.
