Wiki Folklore Documentation is an initiative taken by Wikimedians of Kerala User Group aimed at documenting local folk cultures from different regions of India. Through this initiative, we plan to collaborate with communities and cultural organisations to support the documentation, preservation and dissemination of diverse folk traditions, including oral histories, rituals, art forms and indigenous knowledge in Wikimedia projects.

India has a rich and diverse folk culture, much of which exists in oral or undocumented forms. Due to rapid modernization and social changes, many traditions are at risk of being forgotten. Wikimedia platforms provide an open and sustainable space to document and share this cultural heritage with a global audience.

The main objectives of the project are:

  • To document folk cultures and traditions from different regions of India
  • To support local communities and cultural organisations in sharing their knowledge
  • To create and improve content related to folklore on Wikimedia projects
  • To preserve indigenous and oral knowledge in free and open formats
  • To increase community participation in Wikimedia projects
