African Environment[edit]

The Revised African Convention on the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources was adopted by the African Union Assembly in July 2003 as the governing treaty governing the actions that African states must take to ensure the protection and preservation of Africa's natural resources and environment as an essential component of Africa's heritage. The Organization of African Unity launched Africa Environment Day also known as Wangari Maathai Day on March 3 of each year in order to draw attention to the urgent environmental issues that the continent is currently confronting. In order to honor the late Nobel Laureate's commitment to environmental preservation, Wangari Maathai Day and Africa Environment Day have been observed together every year since 2012.

Prof. Wangari Maathai[edit]

Wangari Maathai

To honor the late Nobel Laureate's commitment to environmental preservation: The day honors Professor Wangari Maathai, who died in 2010 and devoted her life to advancing environmental preservation and sustainable development in Africa. She established the Green Belt Movement, a non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to addressing environmental issues like deforestation and environmental degradation and their greater impact on rural women's livelihoods. These women bore the brunt of the negative environmental effects on agriculture and food security, which resulted in their enfranchisement. She spearheaded the effort to defend Kenya's water catchment areas while promoting tree-planting, environmental protection, and women's rights. She received the Nobel Prize in 2004 and was the first African woman to do so.
