About

[edit]

Wiki Infographics is a platform that leverages structured information within Wikimedia projects to create informative and visually engaging infographics in both fixed and dynamic formats, under an open license.

The current speciality is the bar chart race, in which values are presented in a bar chart in a dynamic manner: as time goes on, bar values change accordingly.

Technical plan

Wiki Infographics development started in May 2024 as an Outreachy project from Wikimedia Brasil. The intern James Okolie, together with mentors Éder Porto and Lucas Belo, developed the first version of the tool throughout Outreachy Round 28.

The technical plan was developed early on in the internship, alongside a diff post, and the team started developing the tool.

The most captivating graph to be developed was the bar chart race, which was gaining traction on social media back in 2024, and still is a popular video format. The idea was to be able to generate those graphs using data from Wikidata.

A first initial version was deployed on the end of 2024 on infographics.toolforge.org.

In 2025, Artur Corrêa started refactoring and some improvements on the tool. Back-end and front-end were unified on the same repository, making testing and deploying easier. Bugs that emerged from initial testing were solved as well. The new features include: light/dark mode switch, translations integrated with TranslateWiki and being able to download the bar chart race graph as a video.
