Wiki Leadership X Initiative (WLX)

Wiki Leadership X Initiative is the flagship leadership development program of the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria designed to equip current and emerging Wikimedia leaders with the knowledge, skills, confidence, and networks required to build, sustain, and scale thriving Wikimedia communities across Nigeria and Africa.

The initiative responds to a critical gap within the Wikimedia movement: while many volunteers possess strong technical editing and program implementation skills, relatively few have received structured leadership development, organizational management, volunteer engagement, governance, and strategic planning training.

Wiki Leadership X seeks to bridge this gap by developing a new generation of community leaders capable of leading sustainable affiliates, user groups, fan clubs, thematic communities, and movement initiatives.

Background

Across the Wikimedia Movement, volunteers play an essential role in advancing free knowledge. However, leading volunteer-driven communities requires more than technical Wikimedia expertise. It demands strategic thinking, effective communication, community management, conflict resolution, governance, partnership building, programme design, and organizational leadership.

The Wiki Leadership X Initiative was established to intentionally invest in leadership development as an essential pillar for strengthening Wikimedia communities and ensuring long-term sustainability across the movement.

Rather than focusing on editing skills alone, the programme develops the leadership competencies required to build resilient communities that can successfully deliver impact while nurturing future leaders.
