"Wiki Loves Africa 2024 - South Sudan: Celebrating the Creative Industries"
[edit]The "Wiki Loves Africa 2024 - South Sudan" project focused on documenting and promoting the creative industries of South Sudan. Our goal was to empower the local community to actively contribute to Wikimedia Commons by showcasing South Sudan's rich cultural heritage, including music, dance, art, and other creative industries.
Implemented Activities
[edit]Throughout the project, we successfully carried out a variety of activities aimed at engaging the South Sudanese community and achieving our goals:
- Workshops and Webinars: We organized workshops and information sessions to educate participants on contributing high-quality media to Wikimedia Commons.
- Community Outreach: Collaborations with local cultural organizations helped to raise awareness of the project.
- Media Support: Participants were trained in copyright and licensing requirements for uploading content to Wikimedia Commons.
- Recognition Event: A closing ceremony was held to celebrate the contributions made by participants.
Results Achieved
[edit]We achieved significant results through the participation of the local community:
- Number of Participants: 20 participants were engaged in the project.
- Number of Editors: 10 participants contributed as editors on Wikimedia projects.
- Content Contributions: A total of 50 media files were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, and we also made improvements to 20 Wikipedia articles and created or improved 100 Wikidata items.
Impact and Reflection
[edit]The project successfully documented and promoted underrepresented aspects of South Sudan’s culture, contributing to the global knowledge commons. By involving diverse ethnic and cultural groups, we helped bridge content gaps and promote cultural exchange. Partnerships with local organizations were key in enhancing our reach.
Challenges and Learnings
[edit]While our outreach strategies were effective, we encountered challenges in retaining participants beyond the project’s duration. We also faced some logistical hurdles in providing on-the-ground media support in remote areas. Despite these challenges, the project was a success, and we aim to apply the lessons learned to future initiatives.
