About

Wiki Loves Africa is a photo contest that celebrates African heritage each year. The 2026 theme is Rites and Rituals. In Lagos, the Wikimedians of Lagos User Group will guide participants to capture and share photos and videos showing ceremonies, festivals, and daily cultural life.

Goals

Help Lagos photographers document local traditions.
Add more African-themed photos and videos to Wikimedia Commons.
Raise awareness of Creative Commons licenses and open knowledge.
Support Lagosians to tell their own stories through images.

Challenges

Few free images show Lagos cultural practices online. Many traditions are fading, and photographers often do not know about Wikimedia Commons. This project will train and support them to share authentic Lagos culture with the world.

Activities

Phase 1: Pre-Contest (March 1–15, 2026)

Community meetings to discuss the Rites and Rituals theme.
Online and social media outreach.
Two-day workshop on Commons uploads and ethical photography.
Two photo walks in Ojo, Ikorodu, Epe, and Lagos Island.

Phase 2: Contest (March 16–April 30, 2026)

Launch event and media upload help sessions.
Mid-contest online check-in to share tips and progress.

Phase 3: Post-Contest (May 2026)

Local judging and awards.
Lagos photo exhibition to showcase best works.
Mentorship for top contributors to continue on Commons.
