Wiki Loves Birds - Assam Chapter

Wiki Loves Birds – Assam Chapter is a regional photography and documentation initiative under the larger Wiki Loves Birds India 2025 campaign. The project focuses on documenting the rich avian diversity of Assam by contributing high-quality, freely licensed photographs of local and migratory bird species to Wikimedia Commons, thereby strengthening open knowledge related to birds of Northeast India.
Assam, located in the northeastern region of India, is one of the most important bird habitats in the Indian subcontinent. The state hosts an exceptional range of ecosystems—including wetlands, grasslands, tropical forests, riverine systems, and hill forests—making it a critical hotspot for both resident and migratory birds. Assam serves as a major wintering and stopover ground for numerous migratory birds traveling along the Central Asian and East Asian–Australasian flyways. Despite this extraordinary diversity, many bird species from Assam remain underrepresented or undocumented on Wikimedia platforms. This project aims to address this gap through structured photographic documentation.
