Welcome to the meta portal for Wiki Loves Children (WLC) is a global, annual campaign dedicated to enhancing the quality and reach of child-related content across Wikipedia and its sister projects. Organized as a series of community-led online edit-a-thons every November/December, the initiative empowers volunteers to create and improve articles on child safety, rights, healthcare, and development.
From its origins in the Bengali Wikimedia community to its expansion into a global framework, WLC seeks to bridge critical information gaps and revitalize platforms like Wikijunior. We invite local communities worldwide to join this movement and help build a safer, more inclusive digital world for the next generation.

History
According to UNICEF, more than half of the world’s children are subjected to severe violence, with a staggering 64 percent of these instances occurring in South Asia. This crisis extends beyond direct victims, profoundly impacting those who witness such violence. UNICEF underscores that the most effective strategy for mitigation is prevention—an effort that begins fundamentally with widespread public awareness.
Despite the Wikimedia movement’s global reach and its role as a primary educational resource, there has been a notable lack of a coordinated, movement-wide initiative dedicated to child abuse and neglect. To address this critical information gap, we are proud to introduce Wiki Loves Children. While the initiative has its roots in the Bengali Wikimedia community, it has evolved into an international movement dedicated to the systematic creation and enhancement of content regarding child safety, legal rights, healthcare, and holistic development. In 2025, the project began a significant new phase of implementation, relaunching on Bengali Wikipedia and Bengali Wikibooks to serve as a model for global expansion.
A cornerstone of this campaign is the strategic revival of Wikijunior, the child-centric branch of Wikibooks. Our objective is to revitalize this platform across various languages into a robust, child-friendly educational hub. Building on lessons learned from the Bengali context—where the platform is being actively rejuvenated—we aim to provide essential support for online learning and digital safety in the post-COVID-19 landscape.
Our vision involves scaling "Wiki Loves Children" across the entire global Wikimedia ecosystem. By adapting this framework to multiple languages and regional contexts, we aim to transform Wikimedia projects into safer, more inclusive, and empowering digital spaces for children worldwide.
