Introduction

[edit]

Wiki Loves Ramadan is an annual Wikimedia community initiative focused on improving and expanding written content about Ramadan across Wikimedia projects. Contributors are encouraged to create new articles, expand existing ones, improve sourcing, and translate content related to Ramadan’s religious, cultural, historical, and social dimensions.

On Meta-Wiki, the primary focus of Wiki Loves Ramadan is content writing. Freely licensed photographs and other media may be used to support and illustrate articles; however, all media contributions are coordinated through Wikimedia Commons and follow Commons-specific guidelines.

The initiative takes place during and around the month of Ramadan, when related topics receive increased public attention. Local activities are coordinated by volunteer contributors, Wikimedia affiliates, and thematic groups across participating communities.

2026 Timeline

[edit]
  • 16 February – 28 March 2026: Local and thematic writing activities
  • 28 March 2026: Last day for eligible content contributions
  • 28 March – 30 April 2026: Review, assessment, local recognition, and local results submission

  • Creation of new encyclopedic articles related to Ramadan
  • Expansion and improvement of existing articles
  • Addition of reliable sources and references
  • Translation of Ramadan-related content across languages

Requirements for local teams

[edit]

To coordinate a local or thematic Wiki Loves Ramadan writing activity, teams are expected to:

  1. Register their community, language, or thematic group on the international coordination page.
  2. Create a local landing page describing writing goals, scope, and contact points.
  3. Provide basic information in English, with additional local-language content as appropriate.
  4. Document coordination leads and reviewers for transparency.
  5. Outline how contributions will be reviewed, highlighted, or recognized locally.

Landing page

[edit]

Participants are typically directed to a landing page when joining Wiki Loves Ramadan activities. This page may be hosted on Meta-Wiki, a local Wikipedia, or another Wikimedia project.

At a minimum, the landing page should include:

  1. A clear description of the writing focus and scope.
  2. Links to suggested articles, redlinks, or priority topics.
  3. Information about how contributions will be tracked or reviewed.
  4. A link to Wikimedia Commons for contributors who wish to add supporting photographs.
  5. Content in local language(s), with an English summary for international coordination.

Guidelines for participants

[edit]

All written contributions must:

  1. Follow the content policies of the Wikimedia project where they are published.
  2. Be encyclopedic, neutral, and verifiable.
  3. Use reliable sources.
  4. Be contributed during the Wiki Loves Ramadan 2026 activity period.

Uploading photographs is optional and not required to participate. Contributors focusing on media uploads should follow the rules and timelines outlined on Wikimedia Commons.

Photography and media contributions

[edit]

All photography and media uploads related to Wiki Loves Ramadan are coordinated through Wikimedia Commons. Media contributions must comply with Commons licensing, copyright, and Freedom of Panorama requirements.

Review and recognition

[edit]

Local teams may recognize contributions through article assessments, highlighted lists, barnstars, certificates, or public acknowledgements. Recognition methods are determined locally, with an emphasis on content quality, collaboration, and long-term impact.

Publicity and outreach

[edit]

Wiki Loves Ramadan writing activities may be promoted through community channels, social media, blog posts, newsletters, or outreach events. Sharing progress, statistics, and success stories helps strengthen cross-community collaboration and visibility.
