Wiki Loves Sport 2025 in Uganda

Wiki Loves Sport in Uganda abbreviated as (WLSUG) was initiated as Wiki Soccerthons in Uganda in from 2020 - 2024 to document only Uganda's association football. This year 2025, it was rebranded to Wiki Loves Sport in Uganda to document all Ugandan sports through creating , translating and improving articles on Wikipedia, uploading quality media files on Wikimedia Commons, creating and expanding Wikidata items about Ugandan sports.

The WLSUG2025 campaign will run as mentorship program that will equip mentees with Wikimedia projects editing, photography, graphics design and videography skills. This program is running for 14 weeks starting from 01 May 2025 up to 31 October 2025.

The Wiki Loves Sport 2025 in Uganda, will be focused on Uganda's association football, netball, boxing, basketball, rugby and volleyball but not limited to sports federations, associations, football clubs, players, stadiums, arenas, coaches, leagues, and seasons.

Campaign goals and targets

1. Develop Wikipedia Editing Skills:

  • Train 15 young Ugandans in Wikipedia,Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons contribution, focusing on sports content.

2. Enrich Wikipedia & Commons with Ugandan Sports Content

  • Create and edit at least 100 Wikipedia articles related to Ugandan sports.
  • Create at least 500 Wikidata items on Ugandan sports.
  • Upload at least 500 media files (photos, interviews, event footage) to Wikimedia Commons.

3. Document Ugandan Sports Heritage: Research and preserve Uganda’s sports history starting with a documentary on Boxing in Uganda.

4. Foster a Sustainable Community: Build a community of sport-focused Wikimedians who will continue contributing after the campaign ends.

5. Bridge the Content Gap: Address the underrepresentation of African sports on Wikimedia platforms.

Rules for the WLSUG2025 campaign

* You must be a registered user on one of the Wikimedia projects that is Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons.

  • One must join the campaign Outreach dashboard here
  • Artifical Intelligence (AI) generated Wikipedia articles will not be eligible for this campaign.
  • All the media files upload to Wikimedia commons should respect copyright.
  • Wikipedia articles should meet the Wikipedia guidelines and policies such as Notability, reliable sources, Manual of Stye, en:Wikipedia:Neutral_point_of_view Neutral Point of View among other policies and guidelines.
  • Articles that contain only lists will not be considered such as a list of Ugandan footballers.
  • Editors must first check the existence of the Wikipedia articles or Wikidata items to avoid duplicates, the duplicate item will be merged into the already existing on and they won't be counted as newly created articles.
  • The participants are required to add the #WLSUG2025 in the edit summary boxes when publishing changes in the articles they have edited on the Wikipedias.

Data facilitation

* The jury will be selected and it will base on the number of Wikipedia articles created and edited, Wikidata items created, and media files uploaded to determine the winners.

  • A mentee has to create at least 2 Wikipedia articles (English or Luganda), edit/expand two Wikipedia articles (Luganda or English) and 10 Wikidata items
