Wiki Loves Village

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Wiki Loves Village 17th December 2025 - 28th February 2026

Wiki Loves Village is an initiative aimed at documenting the cultural, natural, and social life of villages on Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia, and Wikidata. Villages are often underrepresented in free knowledge platforms, and this project seeks to bridge that gap by encouraging contributions that highlight the unique identities of rural areas.

Goals

[edit]
  • Visual Documentation – Collecting photographs and media files of village landscapes, streets, traditional houses, monuments, agriculture, crafts, schools, places of worship, and everyday life.
  • Cultural Preservation – Showcasing festivals, rituals, folk arts, oral traditions, and practices that define rural heritage.
  • Knowledge Expansion – Creating and improving Wikipedia articles about villages, including their history, demographics, geography, and notable features.
  • Structured Data Contributions – Adding and enhancing Wikidata entries related to villages, their institutions, and cultural elements to strengthen linked open data about rural life.
  • Community Engagement – Encouraging local photographers, students, and residents to become knowledge contributors, ensuring authentic representation of their villages.

By bringing together open knowledge enthusiasts and local communities, Wiki Loves Village celebrates rural diversity and ensures that the stories of villages are preserved and accessible to people worldwide.
