Wiki Missing Sources 2025: Empowering Journalists To Increase African Women's Visibility for Wikipedia

The Wiki Missing Sources 2025 Campaign Project is a collaborative initiative by Africa Wiki Women and media organizations in Africa aimed at increasing media coverage and representation of notable African women on Wikipedia. We are collaborating with journalists and media partners to create/increase the number of verifiable sources for citations and draft high-quality, Wiki-friendly stories about African women on their various media platforms.

We recognized a need for this work when we learned that, since October 2014, only 15.53% of English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. Read more. African women's representation was below the radar. In 2025, data from Humaniki shows that the gender representation of African women on Wikipedia is 25%. This means that out of 100,799 biographies from Africa, only 24,239 are about women.

One huge factor slowing this growth is the lack of adequate media coverage of African women for citation purposes. Therefore, without a particular percentage in mind, we recognized that with persistence, we could increase it, one article at a time. By collaborating with key players, we can drive positive change and provide a more accurate representation of African women on Wikipedia.

In summary, the Wiki Missing Sources project focuses on partnering with journalists and media houses to increase the visibility of African women on Wikipedia by providing adequate and reliable references, as well as offering training and practical skills for journalists to create Wiki-worthy content.

Our Goals:

[edit]
  • To create at least 5 new usable news sources for articles about notable women in Africa.
  • Improve content quality and credibility on Wikipedia.
  • Train and empower new and existing editors to contribute to this campaign.
  • And ultimately to turn Women In Redlinks to Bluelinks.

Note: Journalists who write and publish in local languages and speakers of African indigenous languages are highly encouraged to participate.
