Wiki Open Learning
[edit]Wiki Open Learning is an open Wikimedia initiative focused on learning, participation, and capacity building across Wikimedia projects. It aims to support contributor growth through awareness sessions, onboarding activities, collaborative learning, and community-driven events that strengthen engagement with free and open knowledge. The initiative works in alignment with Wikimedia values and encourages responsible participation, documentation, and shared learning within the movement.
The initiative is designed to be inclusive and globally accessible, welcoming participants from diverse backgrounds, regions, and experience levels. Activities may include introductory outreach, contributor skill development, thematic events, and celebrations of Wikimedia milestones, with an emphasis on sustainability, collaboration, and long-term community impact.
Scope of the initiative
[edit]Wiki Open Learning supports learning-oriented Wikimedia activities including contributor onboarding, student-focused engagement, skill development workshops, collaborative discussions, and documentation-driven knowledge sharing. Activities may be local, regional, or global in scope and are designed to grow organically through community participation.
The initiative organises its work into eight thematic areas:
- Onboarding - first steps for new contributors
- Editing - editing skills across Wikipedia, Commons, Wikidata, and other projects
- Tools - community tools, scripts, and gadgets
- Rights - user rights and permissions on different projects
- Infrastructure - Toolforge, MediaWiki, OAuth, Git, and self-hosted wikis
- Community - communication, governance, and conduct
- Campaigns - content campaigns, edit-a-thons, and Wiki Loves competitions
- Funding - grants, scholarships, and sponsorships
All resources are documented in the Learnings library.
