Wiki Photo Africa is a Pan-African registered nonprofit organization dedicated to improving Africa’s visual representation on the Wikimedia projects.

Our core mission is to bridge the visual gap that exists for notable African figures, places, and cultural events by producing, curating, and sharing high-quality, freely licensed images across Wikimedia platforms.

Our Mission

The mission of Wiki Photo Africa is to enhance the quality, diversity, and visibility of African content on Wikimedia platforms through professional photography, open knowledge collaborations, and community engagement. Through targeted projects, partnerships, and trainings, Wiki Photo Africa works to:

Document African stories, people, and culture in pictures.
Creating and curating freely licensed, high-quality photographs,
Recruit and train professional photographers to contribute to Wikimedia Commons.
Strengthen Africa’s media presence in global open knowledge platforms.
Coordinating photo-based Wikimedia initiatives across Africa.

Core Objectives

Bridge the image gap: Create and publish images of African personalities, places, and events on Wikimedia Commons.
Recruit and empower African photographers: Train professionals and creatives on open licensing, copyright, and Wikimedia contribution.
Organize and coordinate various photography-focused initiatives: Establish multiple wiki photography interventions across the continent that celebrate African creativity and identity.
Collaborate with Wikimedia communities and cultural institutions across Africa.
Celebrate and reward contributors: Recognize individuals improving Africa’s visual identity through Wikimedia projects.
Promote open access: Ensure free, global use of high-quality African visual content.
