Wiki Photo Africa/Programs
Wiki Photo Africa is a Pan-African registered nonprofit organization dedicated to improving Africa’s visual representation on the Wikimedia projects.
Our core mission is to bridge the visual gap that exists for notable African figures, places, and cultural events by producing, curating, and sharing high-quality, freely licensed images across Wikimedia platforms.
As an organization, Wiki Photo Africa is committed to increasing the quantity, quality, and effective use of African images across Wikimedia projects. We advance this commitment through a range of flagship programs and interventions designed to produce, curate, and promote high-quality, freely licensed visual content. These initiatives serve as strategic entry points for engaging photographers, strengthening community participation, and addressing critical visual gaps on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. Our flagship projects include, but are not limited to, the following:
WikiPortraits Africa
[edit]A project focused on creating professional portraits (“ritraits”) of African celebrities, leaders, and public figures whose images are missing from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. This is in collaboration with the WikiPortraits and a way to increase the conscious presence of WikiPotraits in Africa.
- Field visits and studio sessions with notable personalities.
- Uploading high-quality portraits under Creative Commons licenses.
- Collaborations with media organizations and celebrity agencies.
Wiki Africa Photo Chat
[edit]An annual photography conference dedicated to Wikimedia photographers and image contributors across Africa.
- Discussions, keynote talks and panels on visual storytelling.
- Skills workshops on Wikimedia contribution and Creative Commons licensing.
- Networking among photographers, Wikimedians, and cultural institutions.
An annual photo contest celebrating African festivals, culture, and traditions.
- Encourages photographers to document cultural events, performances, and community life.

- Rewards outstanding entries that best capture the African spirit.
Wiki Photo Africa Award
[edit]An annual award ceremony recognizing outstanding contributors who have made significant visual contributions to Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia in improving Africa’s coverage.
- Categories may include: Image Contributor of the Year, Best Cultural Documentation, Outstanding New Contributor, Community Partner of the Year, and other categories.
- Highlights excellence, creativity, and commitment within the Wikimedia visual community.
- Encourages continuous participation, collaboration, and innovation among African photographers.
Mini Grant for Solo Photography Travels
[edit]The Wiki Photo Africa Mini Grant for Solo Photography Travels is a targeted micro-grant program designed to support individual African photographers to independently document notable people, places, events, and cultural practices that are underrepresented or missing on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.
The program empowers photographers to undertake short, focused photography trips within their country or region, producing high-quality, freely licensed images that strengthen Africa’s visual presence on global open knowledge platforms.
This initiative recognizes that many important African stories exist outside major cities and events, and that solo, localized travel by trusted photographers is often the most effective way to capture authentic visual documentation.
Bi-Monthly Photography Training & Community Office Hours
[edit]As part of our commitment to improving the quality, consistency, and usability of African visual content on Wikimedia platforms, Wiki Photo Africa organizes bi-monthly photography training and community office hour sessions (held once every two months) for its contributors.
These sessions are designed to strengthen contributors’ understanding of photography best practices, Wikimedia Commons standards, and open licensing requirements, while also providing a supportive space for learning, feedback, and collaboration. You can find the landing page here.
