Wiki Re-Imagine Lagos Project/Webinar and Writing Contest for Travel Journalists
Lagos State Government and Wikimedia User Group Nigeria present a Webinar and Writing Contest as an integral part of the ongoing Wiki Imagine Lagos initiative. The two programs are designed to promote Lagos State's rich heritage, focusing on the documentation and publication of its heritage sites.
Earlier this year, our Wikimedian in Residence (WIR) conducted a Needs Assessment on the state heritage assets and other vital events in the state Ministry of Tourism, Art, and Culture. This work catalogues the heritage assets of Lagos State and has given us invaluable insights into the current state of heritage preservation and coverage.
Why Wikipedia?
Wikipedia is the world's most referenced online encyclopedia, offering expansive coverage on countless topics, each supported by credible sources. Yet, more coverage is needed, especially regarding Lagos' heritage assets.
Our Needs Assessment reveals that:
Lagos State has over 163 resources, including tourism, monuments, facilities, festivals, and notable events.
However, seven out of ten of these unique resources still lack stand-alone Wikipedia pages, mainly due to the lack of media coverage.
Problem Statement
[edit]The lack of media coverage is a significant reason why over 70% of these heritage resources still need to be represented on Wikipedia. Without sufficient stories and documentation, these sites miss the visibility they deserve.
Solutions
[edit]To address this, the following actions will be carried out:
- Webinar (Roundtable Discussion): Key stakeholders in Nigeria's heritage preservation sector will discuss strategies for improving the documentation of Lagos’ heritage sites on Wikipedia, fostering collaboration, and creating a roadmap for filling these gaps.
- Content Writing Contest: A writing contest will be organised for Nigerian journalists, challenging them to submit published work about heritage sites in Lagos that need more coverage. The goal is to inspire journalists to contribute stories that will be referenced in Wikipedia articles, helping to enrich Lagos' heritage narratives.
Other Milestones
[edit]- A jury will review the submitted works and select the ten best entries. The top three entries will receive cash rewards of ₦500,000, ₦300,000, and ₦200,000, while the remaining seven will be awarded digital recognition certificates.
- A series of community-led edit-a-thons and campaigns will be organised to improve the identified sites with the submitted published works.
