Wiki for Minorities/Minori-Ties Programme/Minorities Center
The Minorities Center (MinCen) is a virtual platform dedicated to fostering collaborative work around open knowledge. It brings together users with shared interests to contribute to specific topics and projects managed by our team. We aim to strengthen each other's capabilities while offering support to meet the needs essential for optimizing our collective efforts.
Mission
[edit]Our core objective is to improve the representation of diverse minority groups under free licenses across all Wikimedia projects. These groups may be recognized within specific countries or regions and include:
- Ethnic minorities, including diaspora communities
- Linguistic minorities, both local and foreign
- Religious minorities
- People with disabilities
- Individuals living in extreme poverty
- Those persecuted due to their minority status
- And other underrepresented communities
By working together, we strive to amplify voices that are often overlooked and ensure their presence in open knowledge ecosystems.
Vision
[edit]We envision a world where all minority communities are accurately represented, celebrated, and empowered through open knowledge. By fostering inclusive collaboration and equitable access to information, we aim to reshape digital spaces to reflect the richness and diversity of all human experiences.
Additionally, we work for a future where no community is silenced, and every minority has the power to tell their own story. Through open knowledge, we challenge systemic invisibility, reclaim digital spaces, and build a more just, inclusive, and representative world—one contribution at a time.
History
[edit]Wiki for Minorities was founded in 2023 as a virtual initiative and emerging group within the Wikimedia movement. Since October 2023, we have carried out a series of activities, both virtual and in person, focused on advancing the representation of minority communities through open knowledge.
Following the establishment of our Founding Council in 2024, we began meeting regularly in virtual spaces to discuss key topics, coordinate our work, and explore strategies for sustainable growth.
In March 2025, the idea of creating a "minorities center" took shape. This concept emerged as a way to unify and strengthen our virtual collaboration, especially considering the geographical distances between our members—who are located across multiple countries on every continent. The hub also serves as a platform to connect with individuals, user groups, and institutions outside the Wikimedia movement, enabling us to seek technical, professional, and other forms of support to enhance our work.
