Wiki for Sustainable Futures 2026/FAQ
What is the Wiki for Sustainable Futures Campaign?
[edit]The Wiki for Sustainable Futures Campaign was born as a result of a renaming and transition process of the previous Wiki for Human Rights Campaign. This Campaign is focused on environmental, climate change and sustainability topics. 2026 theme is based on the topic: "Knowledge to transform: Water, Food and Energy". The Campaign is an invitation to everyone to contribute knowledge, and to get engaged with different activities to raise awareness about the role of Wikipedia in delivering high-quality, reliable, multilingual information on the topics of the campaign.
Why participate?
[edit]By editing Wikipedia on these topics, we are promoting information integrity on public interest knowledge. We can also give visibility to the knowledge contained in specialized reports, peer-reviewed journals, and more.
It's important to continue editing Wikipedia in an AI-driven world. Generalist AI engines don’t deal well with languages other than English. They also don’t have good information about local issues. And lastly, they use Wikipedia to deliver content and benchmark quality.
We live in an information chaos, where AI and disinformation campaigns are eroding shared realities. Wikipedia remains a trusted source on critical matters.

What topics can my contributions focus on?
[edit]The theme for this year's campaign is "Knowledge to transform: Water, Food and Energy". For this campaign, we are using five UN landmark reports on the topic, which you can find in the Global Topics List.
You can explore the different relationships that these three topics have with the world around us. Specific contributions could include:
- Local sources of water, food and energy for cities, industries, urban infrastructure.
- Food production, distribution and commercialization across the chain. In particular, we recommend looking into the role of food producers, such as women and pastoralists.
- Energy sources, the impact of energy production on the environment, energy transition, specific forms of energy production (renewable energies, fossil fuel production, etc.).
- Water, food and energy in relationship with climate change and environmental harms.
- Strategies and solutions for better management of water, food and energy.
If you are not interested in any of these topics, you are always welcome to contribute more around the overarching topics of the campaign: environmental, climate change and sustainability issues.
What can I organize?
[edit]Typically, organizers hold national or local in-person or online events, including panels, contests, edit-a-thons, and other forms of public engagement. Organizers are welcome to sign-in in the Organizer Registry, to receive support and access connection opportunities.
Who is eligible to participate?
[edit]Anyone who has an interest in the campaign and will like to organize or participate in the Global Challenge is eligible. These could be
- Individuals
- Organizations
- Wikimedians
- local Wikimedian affiliate
