Explore the Global Topic List and start contributing. For this year’s campaign, we are using the five UN reports showcased in the Global Topic List as the basis for building the global topic list. The global topic list features 15 top encyclopedic concepts contained in the reports that need to be updated and/or translated. These global reports need to be translated into local knowledge.

Water: Global Water Bankruptcy, reflecting a changing reality

[edit]

The Institute for Water, Environment and Health at the United Nations University published this year a report on “Global Water Bankruptcy”. UN State Members will meet at the end of the year at the 2026 United Nations Water Conference. This is an opportunity to update Wikipedia’s information on the topic.

In most parts of the world, water is becoming less available and of lesser quality, entering an irreversible state. A ¼ of the global population now lives at least one month under water stress. Water is essential for growing our food, powering our societies and building goods. Wikipedia needs to reflect that water is no longer an "infinitely available resource" accordingly.

Adapting the global topic to your national or local context

[edit]
  1. Search for progress on Sustainable Development Goal 6 at your national or local level. Add it to the national or city-level article.
  2. Document and update water sources in your region, country or city. Add sections on water quality, pollution, or availability.
  3. Search for water-hungry crops and drought-resistant crops being grown in your region. Update their information.
  4. Search for hydropower plants in your national or local context. Update them.
  5. Search for water intensive industries in your national or local context. Add information about them either in the national-level article or in the industry directly.

Report: Global Water Bankruptcy: Living Beyond Our Hydrological Means in the Post-Crisis Era

Available only in English Summary: This report presents key facts around "water bankruptcy". This term is used to refer as a post-crisis era for water management. The author of the report suggests that talking about "water scarcity" and "water crisis" inaccurately reflects the current situation of water systems, where resources have been depleted and impoverished to reach a state where they can no longer be restored to its original baseline. This affects both rural and urban environments, food and energy production, and health. The report describes this situation and explains some of the measures that need to be taken to adapt to the new scenario.

Food: Women in agriculture; pastoralists and rangelands

[edit]

What food we grow, how do we grow it and who grows it? Wikipedia needs to reflect better on the role of women and pastoralists in growing our food and taking care of the land.

This Year is the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists and the International Year of the Woman Farmer. FAO has created a resource hub through the Pastoralist Knowledge Hub . The Status of Women in Agrifood Systems is a global report, that also features two sub-regional reports for Latin America & the Caribbean and for Sub-saharan Africa.

Report: The status of women in agrifood systems

[edit]

Source: Global Report Available in English, Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish Regional reports:

Summary: Women represent an important part of the workforce in agriculture. In less developed countries, they can represent up to 50% of the workforce. However, they have less access to land, financial resources, and digital technologies to improve farming practices. Alongside with their work responsibilities, women also do a significant amount of unpaid work, such as cleaning, cooking, and taking care of children in the farm. They also spend more time gathering wood and water. Cultural and societal norms impose gender roles that prevent them from having better access to the market. For every dollar that a man makes in agriculture, a woman makes 82 cents. To address the gender disparities in agriculture, gender-transformative approaches can help change norms, while being cost-effective and having high returns.

Energy: Defossilizing our economies and seizing the moment of opportunity

[edit]

Global events such as the war in Ukraine, the occupation of Venezuela and the war in Iran are pushing the conversation around decarbonizing the economy. Fossil fuels emissions are the main drivers of climate change. Climate change impacts water, food, nature and living beings.

Last year, the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of climate change published a report on the impact on fossil fuels on human rights. If we want to live in a survivable planet, we need reliable knowledge on fossil fuels, their role in the climate crisis, and how we can move away from them. There's momentum to do so: a UN Report from 2025 signaled an important growth on renewable energies and the energy transition. Having reliable, updated information on renewable energies is key to counter the disinformation campaigns being pushed by fossil fuel interests.
