From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Background[edit]

This event focused on training participants on the fundamentals of editing both on Wikipedia and Wikidata and creating wiki data entries for female professors in Nigeria to celebrate the International Women’s Day [IWD] 2023. The program was targeted at bridging the gender gap in Wikimedia as well as addresses the geographical underrepresentation of Nigeria and indeed Africa in Wikimedia projects. In this event, participants created wikidata for female professors in Nigeria as part of our celebration of International Women’s Day, 2023. In the event we took the participants through the basic knowledge about Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Projects.

Aim[edit]

The major aim of this event was to train the participants on the fundamentals of editing both English and Igbo Wikipedia, as well as introduce them to Wikidata and also to create Wikidata of female professors, as part of our celebration of International Women Day, 2023.

Schedule[edit]

  • Date: 23rd March 2023
  • Time:10.00 am - 02:00 pm WAT (in-person)
  • Venue: National Energy Research Centre, University of Nigeria, Enugu State

Outcome[edit]

The event focused on teaching participants about fundamentals of editing and Wikidata for female professors to mark the International Women's day 2023 It was an in-person event athat was held at National Energy Research Center University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Even though some of the participants has been contributing to Wikimedia projects, this was the first time the participants were introduced to Wikidata. The event had 18 editors and 23 participants in attendance. There were participants who could not edit because they had no android or smart phones and no laptop. We created 21 items, edited 31 items, had 319 edits, 43 references, 26 common upload and 923 views. The participants were put through some of the fundamentals of Wikimedia Foundation, Movement strategy, Wikipedia Policies and Guidelines and the Five Pillars. Creating Wikidata for female Professors was very exciting for the participants as they learnt that such action could help to reduce the gender and geographic gap in Wikimedia. This was a pointer to the importance of contributing to Wikimedia projects and as well promoting Igbo Language and Culture.

Two persons (a male and a female) with special needs also participated. They have been regular in our activities and need to be encouraged.
