Wikiesfera/Reports/2024

Wikiesfera Grupo de Usuarixs (ESP-WE) received official recognition from the Affiliations Committee on May 9, 2018. This 2025, it has been ten years since its formation as a stable working group in the former municipal culture center, Medialab Prado, in Madrid, Spain. It has also been seven years since it became an officially recognized group. Since its establishment in 2015, Wikiesfera has achieved noteworthy accomplishments in its contributions to Wikipedia and in fostering a feminist community of Wikipedians, gaining recognition as an influential entity, a reference in Spain.
The following report highlights the most significant achievements of Wikiesfera over the past year, from July 2023 to June 2024. A detailed list of activities is also available at this link.
10th Anniversary
[edit]
In 2025, Wikiesfera celebrates a decade as a community committed to reducing the gender gap on Wikipedia and opening pathways for more women to actively participate in the creation of free knowledge. Over these ten years, the project has shown that transforming a space like Wikipedia—historically dominated by a male majority and riddled with biases—is possible when built from a collective, everyday, and caring approach. It's not just about editing articles, but about fostering a feminist, horizontal culture of participation where every woman who joins finds a safe, supportive, and transformative space.
This anniversary is not only a temporal milestone: it is an opportunity to look back and recognize how an initiative born out of a commitment to justice and community has managed to sustain itself, replicate, and evolve. Wikiesfera has driven concrete changes in content and in the ways of doing things, showing that another Wikipedia is possible when the value of silenced stories is acknowledged, access to tools is facilitated, and mutual care is prioritized as a driving force for shared knowledge. We like to think that, more than a project, Wikiesfera has become a daily political practice that envisions and builds a fairer encyclopedia for everyone.

Strategic lines
[edit]In 2024, Wikiesfera defined four strategic lines of work: Gender, GLAM, Memory, and Knowledge Equity. All of them are grounded in our feminist and intersectional vision of free knowledge, as part of a broader process of structural transformation supported by the financial backing of the Wikimedia Foundation. This new framework strengthens our commitment to greater diversity and social justice within the Wikimedia ecosystem, marking a turning point in our path toward increased professionalization and capacity for advocacy. Each line seeks to critically engage in the production of content, expanding the voices and knowledge that have historically been excluded.
Gender
[edit]Work related to gender continues to be one of the pillars of Wikiesfera and runs transversally through all our activities. During this period, we have deepened a broader and more critical perspective on the gender gap within the Wikimedia universe. We do not limit ourselves to creating biographies of women: we also highlight their cultural production, develop framework articles, and question notability criteria that perpetuate their exclusion from spaces like Wikipedia. All of this is done from an intersectional approach that prioritizes the representation of women, dissident identities, and historically marginalized contexts, moving away from Eurocentrism and Anglocentrism whenever possible.

Since its early years, Wikiesfera has worked to highlight the contributions of women in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) on Wikipedia. We do this through editathons, campaigns, and training programs with the goal of reducing the knowledge gap in the free encyclopedia and encouraging the participation of new female editors. We collaborate with academic, scientific, cultural, and feminist institutions, as well as networks of researchers, thereby expanding the reach of our actions.
Within this theme, the project Women in Energy and Environment is included, which we developed together with the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) to make visible on Wikipedia relevant women in the fields of energy and the environment and to train new editors. Additionally, once again we joined the 11F initiative.
Women’s Health
[edit]
Following the success last year, when we focused our work on abortion and emergency contraception in Spain (featured on Wikipedia’s Main page in November 2024), this year we have continued to deepen our understanding of the challenges and needs that arise when addressing how women’s health is represented fairly and respectfully in knowledge spaces. We continue to find consensus on the importance of making visible both the historical trajectory and the struggles women have undertaken to assert their rights in this area, prioritizing a perspective centered on their experiences over approaches that have historically erased their role, such as those limited to religious viewpoints or male figures in positions of power.
The collective and voluntary search for relevant sources related to women’s health, and especially the sharing of historical knowledge to trace and reconstruct the genealogy of certain situations, has allowed us this year to celebrate the creation of two new articles that provide important history, sources, and medical considerations, visibilizing women and their specific situations: Menopause in Spain and HIV and AIDS in Spain. The latter has also been recognized as a Good Article on Wikipedia, as a high-quality article that comprehensively and thoroughly informs on the topic.
We will continue along this path, collectively reflecting on what kinds of framework articles Wikipedia needs on this underrepresented topic, and striving to find relevant sources to build them so they are useful and informative for everyone.
Extraordinary Women from Murcia
[edit]Since 2022, we have maintained a collaboration with EnClave Cultura and the City Council of Murcia. In February 2025, we held the 2nd Editathon on Extraordinary Women from Murcia.

Since 2020, Wikiesfera, together with the Laboratory of the Directorate General of Open Government and Social Innovation (LAAAB) of the Government of Aragón and in collaboration with the Aragonese Institute for Women (IAM), has promoted the coordination of editathons for the Aspasia Project. Additionally, in November 2024, we held Wikipedia introduction workshops with a gender perspective in Zaragoza, Huesca, and Teruel, as well as the Editatona of Aragonese women in the performing arts #30N. The Aspasia Project continues in 2025, aiming to make visible on Wikipedia notable women from Aragón in various fields and to attract new editors to join the working group.
GLAM
[edit]This line of work has continued to grow and strengthen with a focus on increasing the visibility of women in art and culture, while also reinforcing ties with libraries, archives, and museums. In recent months, we have collaborated with institutions such as the State Archives, the Teatro de la Zarzuela, the National Museum of Decorative Arts, the Costume Museum, and the Sephardic Museum, among others. Additionally, we have delivered the workshop “First Steps in Wikipedia” at the Municipal Libraries of Madrid, aiming to promote the creation of new working groups in the city.

In 2024, Wikiesfera signed an agreement with the General Subdirectorate of State Archives of the Ministry of Culture to make visible on Wikipedia the women highlighted in the project Women Researchers in the State Archives (1900–1970). This pioneering collaboration included the organization of five editathons (three in-person, held in Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville, and two virtual). Additionally, illustrator Carla Berrocal created original portraits of some researchers, addressing the lack of free images and helping to represent these key figures on Wikipedia. The project was presented at the I Congreso Nacional de Archivos in Pamplona and the Wikimedia+Libraries International Conference in Mexico, sparking interest and potential collaborations.
Wikiproyecto Circo
[edit]Created in 2022 by Lalviarez, this year we have continued to support Wikiproyecto:Circo, consolidating it as a reference space for raising awareness about the circus world on Wikipedia. In April 2025, we organized the second edition of the Campaña Mujeres del Circo, contributing to the representation of women in this field. Additionally, the project was selected to take part in the poster session at Wikimania 2024, alongside 35 other international initiatives from the Wikimedia Movement.
Memory
[edit]
The Memory focus is one of the most meaningful lines of work for Wikiesfera, as it connects Wikipedia editing with historical justice, feminism, and symbolic reparation. From a perspective centered on women and their life stories, we work to highlight experiences of resistance, repression, and survival that have been systematically erased from both official narratives and the digital space.
Over the past year, we have carried out four thematic campaigns (on Afghan women, witches, democratic memory, and women in times of war), as well as two edit-a-thons focused on historical memory (Memory and Resistance and Women and Democratic Memory), in collaboration with organizations such as Herstóricas.

Launched in October 2024, the Women’s Memory Wikiproject was created to highlight and organize the ongoing work of our community, which over the past decade has contributed hundreds of articles related to historical memory from a feminist perspective. Its creation marks a milestone for Wikiesfera, as it gives recognition and structure to one of our most active and impactful lines of action.
In its first eight months, the project has already brought together 36 registered participants and over 200 articles published, establishing itself as a key reference within the Spanish-language Wikimedia ecosystem. Additionally, due to the breadth of the project and the richness of the topics addressed, we have launched the Witches subproject, focused on recovering the memory of women persecuted throughout history.
Knowledge Equity
[edit]At Wikiesfera, we understand knowledge equity as a fundamental principle that underpins all our lines of work. Inspired by the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), over the past year we have strengthened our commitment to intersectional approaches that allow us to broaden the representation of diverse women within the Wikimedia ecosystem.
This approach has led to the inclusion of a wider range of profiles in our activities, including LBT women, non-binary people, and individuals from historically marginalized backgrounds. Notable examples include campaigns and edit-a-thons aimed at increasing the visibility of African and Afghan women, as well as women from traditionally underrepresented regions in the Spanish-language Wikipedia, such as Galicia, Asturias, Murcia, and Aragón. These actions support our goal of building a more plural, decentralized, and just narrative of knowledge.
LGBT
[edit]
The visibility of LGBT profiles remains a priority for our community. At Wikiesfera, we work from an intersectional perspective that integrates LGBT content across all our focus areas, while also promoting specific activities dedicated to this community.
During this period, we organized an edit-a-thon on notable lesbian biographies and launched a campaign focused on LBT women. We also joined the international initiative Wiki Loves Pride 2025, led by Wikimedia LGBT+ in celebration of Pride Month. Many of our editors are also actively involved in WikiProject:LGBT, contributing to greater representation and diversity within the Wikimedia ecosystem.
Community
[edit]The Wikiesfera community continues to grow and strengthen, both in Madrid and in other regions across the country. Throughout this period, we have maintained our regular in-person and online meetings, creating spaces for learning and ongoing collaboration among editors with varying levels of experience.
Madrid
[edit]
During the 2024–2025 academic year, we continued to meet weekly at the La Fabulosa bookstore, an alternative cultural space in central Madrid that has hosted our initiatives since 2022. This comfortable and accessible setting has encouraged the participation of new editors and the development of activities related to free knowledge, such as the Editatona on women playwrights and stage directors, featuring María Folguera, or the Editatona on women, memory, and resistance, which included sociologist and political scientist Isabel Serrano.
This year, we also made a slight adjustment to our meeting schedule to better support work-life balance, in response to feedback gathered from the survey conducted at the end of the previous year.
Virtual Meetings
[edit]In order to facilitate the participation of people living in other cities or with limited availability to attend in-person gatherings, we organize two virtual meetings per month. These sessions help maintain engagement for those who have already taken part in workshops or editathons, and foster collective support in the editing process. As with the in-person meetings, we have adjusted the meeting times based on suggestions collected in the annual survey, aiming to better support work-life balance. In addition, we maintain an active Telegram group where the community shares information and resolves questions.

WikiAragón (Zaragoza)
[edit]Our node in Aragón has now completed four years, with a stable and committed group of female editors. They meet monthly and have continued to promote the visibility of women through their Extraordinary Women campaigns, which highlight role models across various fields, and the Quiz: Who is she?, featuring questions that explore the lives and achievements of different women. WikiAragón remains an example of community sustainability and local autonomy.
Wikimorada (Vigo)
[edit]In October 2024, Wikimorada was born—a new node based in Vigo—thanks to the initiative of our colleague Sabela Cebro and the support of the cooperative A Morada. Emerging from an edit-a-thon focused on notable Galician women, the group now has 23 participants who edit in both Galician and Spanish. Additionally, Wikimorada was present at the Feira da Economía Social do Mar #ESDOMAR, where it was represented by Sabela. Since its creation, they have already held 7 monthly meetings.

WikiAsturianes (Gijón)
[edit]Our most recent node, WikiAsturianes, began its journey in February 2025 with an introductory Wikipedia workshop from a gender perspective held in Gijón, attended by 19 people. In just a few months, they have held four monthly meetings and already have an active community of 27 editors, strengthening Wikiesfera's presence in the north of the country.
Activities
[edit]Editatonas
[edit]Since 2015, Wikiesfera has been tackling the gender gap on Wikipedia by organizing editathons on a wide range of topics, aiming to raise awareness of this issue and encourage more women to join the project. These gatherings (over 140 since Wikiesfera began) have a playful and engaging tone, with participants supported at all times so they can enjoy the experience. The goal is not for it to be a formal training session, but a meaningful experience: successfully publishing an article serves as a motivation to keep learning and editing.
Between the second half of 2024 and the first half of 2025, 24 editathons were held—22 in-person across 7 Spanish cities (Seville, Madrid, Valencia, Oviedo, Murcia, Toledo, and Ponferrada) and 2 virtual.

Campaigns
[edit]Since early 2024, Wikiesfera has been promoting online, asynchronous thematic campaigns to continue generating content that reduces the gender gap and to encourage active participation from our community beyond in-person activities. Each campaign, which runs for about two weeks, focuses on a theme aligned with our strategic priorities. We select a curated list of articles to translate or improve (biographies, key concepts, organizations, etc.) and centralize the information through the Wikimedia Event Registration tool. Promotion is carried out via our newsletter, social media, Telegram channel, and our Wikipedia page. Metrics are collected using PE Dashboard and Event Metrics.
In 2025, we continue consolidating this format as an effective way to sustain community activity. From July 2024 to June 2025, we have run 12 campaigns:

- June de 2025 | Campaña de mujeres LBT (13/06-30/06) REPORT. With Wikiproyecto:LGBT
The response from our community to the asynchronous campaigns has been very positive, both in terms of participation and article creation. These campaigns are not only helping to reduce knowledge gaps on Wikipedia but have also enabled users who do not usually take part in synchronous activities to resume editing independently. The strong positive reception was reflected in the results of a survey conducted at the end of 2024, where many participants suggested new themes for future campaigns, some of which we have already carried out.
Talks and Workshops
[edit]During the 2024–2025 academic year, Wikiesfera was invited by 16 institutions from various fields (education, culture, and technology) to give talks, lead workshops, and participate in panel discussions related to content gaps on Wikipedia, particularly the gender gap. In addition to the activities organized by our group, we also took part in several national forums, sharing our experience and feminist approach to free knowledge.

Projects
[edit]Women in Energy and the Environment
[edit]In September 2024, Wikiesfera launched a project in collaboration with the Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico (MITECO) of the Spanish Government to promote the creation of Wikipedia content on environmental and energy-related topics from a gender perspective. The initiative had a dual objective: to make visible the contributions of notable women in these fields and to train new editors affiliated with specialized organizations, thus strengthening a community of Wikipedians with diverse expertise.
This Women in Energy and the Environment initiative aligns with Wikimedia’s commitment to sustainability and equity, in line with the goals of the 2030 Movement Strategy. Three in-person edit-a-thons were held, resulting in dozens of new articles about women, key concepts, and organizations related to the energy and environmental sectors.

Women of Zarzuela
[edit]
The Women of Zarzuela project was launched in July 2024 as a collaboration between the Teatro de la Zarzuela (INAEM, Ministry of Culture) and Wikiesfera, with the aim of increasing the visibility on Wikipedia of notable women from the history of Spanish lyrical theater who, despite their careers, did not yet have articles on the free encyclopedia. Based on this concern, a proposal was designed that brought together cultural institutions, around ten experts in lyrical music, six universities, and the Wikipedia community. The project included a training program aimed at students and researchers, which culminated in an edit-a-thon in May. Additionally, the team worked with the Biblioteca Nacional de España and the Museo Nacional de Artes Escénicas in Almagro to release images under free licenses.

In June, the closing event of the project was held, with the participation of the director of Teatro de la Zarzuela, Isamay Benavente, and Mª Luz González Peña, director of the Centro de Documentación y Archivo (CEDOA) of the Sociedad General de Autores y Editores (SGAE), who praised the initiative and expressed interest in continuing the project. A video of the project is available.
Wikimedia Movement
[edit]In April 2025, Wikiesfera became a full member of Wikimedia Europe (WMEU) and joined the Diversity Working Group to help ensure that diversity remains a priority in WMEU's strategy in the coming years. Over the past year, we have also continued to strengthen our alliances with other Wikimedia Movement groups, as well as our presence at events — both as participants and as speakers.
Alliances
[edit]Below, we mention the Wikimedia Movement groups with which we have established some kind of alliance or have collaborated with during the last year.
- Wikimedia Europe
- Wikieditoras LX
- Art+Feminism
- Wikimedia LGBT+
- Wikiproyecto:LGBT
- Wikiproyecto:Circo
- Wikiproyecto:Memoria de las mujeres
- Wikimedia Portugal
- Wikimedia Foundation
Participation in events
[edit]Over the past year, Wikiesfera has participated in several international Wikimedia Movement events, strengthening its presence and sharing its feminist approach to free knowledge.

In August 2024, six members of Wikiesfera attended Wikimania in person, where they shared our philosophy and way of working with the Wikimedia community. During the opening day, we took part in the WikiWomen Summit, where Patricia Horrillo gave the keynote speech titled “Together We Are More Visible” (vídeo). In her talk, she highlighted the obstacles women face in making their contributions visible — both on Wikipedia and beyond — and called for structural changes within the Wikimedia Movement to ensure gender equity through concrete actions and adequate resources.

As part of the official Wikimania 2024 program, Wikiesfera also presented a poster on the Wikiproyecto:Circo and delivered a talk titled “The Wikiesfera Formula: A Feminist Approach to Bridging the Gender Gap”(vídeo). In this session, we explained how our community works to close the gender gap by creating safe, collaborative, and feminist spaces. Our colleagues from WikiEditoras LX, Ana Bragança and Flavia Doria, also shared their experiences inspired by the Wikiesfera model, with the key support of Tila Cappelletto. It was a very emotional presentation, and we felt that, together, we are transforming the digital landscape to ensure more voices are heard and represented.
Additionally, for the second consecutive year, we attended the Wikidata Days held in Lisbon. On the other hand, although we were scheduled to participate, we were unable to attend the annual Wikimedia España conference due to its cancellation following the severe flooding caused by the DANA in Valencia.
In January 2025, Wikiesfera took part in the Wikimedia+Libraries International Convention in Mexico City, where we presented the Women Researchers in State Archives project. This experience generated strong interest among librarians, archivists, and other Wikimedians, opening the door to potential future collaborations.
On April 25 and 26, we attended the General Assembly of Wikimedia Europe for the first time, held in Prague. There, we participated in the strategic review process and formally became a full member of the organization. Wikiesfera also joined the Diversity Working Group to help ensure that diversity remains a key priority in WMEU’s future strategy.
Collaborations
[edit]
We have also supported and collaborated in various Wikimedia Movement campaigns and actively participated in the activities of different groups.
- Since 2019, Wikiesfera has carried out activities to raise the visibility of the LGBT community. To strengthen this commitment, we collaborate regularly with the group working on the Wikiproyecto:LGBT, and our editors contribute dozens of articles each year.
- In February 2025, we tested the platform The Capacity Exchange and provided feedback to help improve its next iteration.
- Feminist Time: Time to Edit Wikipedia. In March 2025, Wikiesfera co-organized this international campaign alongside 20 organizations and Wikimedia groups from 12 Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries. The campaign highlighted how the unequal distribution of time affects women's contributions to free knowledge, and it resulted in new biographies of feminist economics theorists. Wikiesfera also offered the online workshop How to Contribute to Wikipedia When You Have No Time, focusing on editing Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons from a mobile device. We organized three editing activities: two in-person editathons dedicated to female authors and Sephardic women, and one virtual campaign about women in times of war.
- That same month, we also joined the Celebrate Women campaign promoted by the Wikimedia Foundation.
- In May, we took part in the iArt+Feminism 2025 campaign with our editathon on female muralists.
- In June 2025, we joined the #WikiLovesPride campaign and became a local node of Wikimedia LGBT, organizing one campaign on LBT women and an editathon focused on lesbian women.
Awards and Recognition
[edit]Lovie Award
[edit]
In November 2024, Wikiesfera was honored with a Lovie Award in the Special Achievement category. These European awards, which recognize excellence on the internet and celebrate creative and cultural impact, acknowledged the significant influence of our project within the European digital ecosystem. This recognition reinforces our commitment to continue working together to close the gender gap on Wikipedia.
Avanzadoras Awards
[edit]In March 2025, Wikiesfera was selected as one of the two finalists in the Fighting Inequality category of the 11th edition of the Avanzadoras Awards, alongside Blanca Pérez Lozano, co-founder and director of SIC4Change, and the winner, Daniela Miranda, lead researcher at ANDAROMI. These awards, organized by 20 Minutos in collaboration with OXFAM Intermón, Universidad Nebrija, and TeamLabs, have been held since 2014 to recognize and highlight the work of women who are driving a more just and equal society, as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations.
International Women’s Day
[edit]In recognition of our work to make women more visible, Wikiesfera was invited to participate in the official event for International Women’s Day (March 8, 2025), organized by the Instituto de las Mujeres and held at the Auditorium of the Museo del Prado. The event featured the participation of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and Patricia Horrillo took part in the panel "Feminism and the Ultra-Conservative Backlash", where she spoke about Wikiesfera’s experience and approach in confronting hate speech and invisibility in digital environments. A video of the event is available.
Communication
[edit]Website
[edit]
During the first half of 2025, we continued improving the Wikiesfera website to make it clearer, more accessible, and better aligned with our visual identity. This redesign allows us to better showcase our strategic lines, projects, and the central role of the community. The site is now also available in English, making it easier to access for non-Spanish speakers.
Among the main updates is a new section dedicated to the community, where we explain our structure based on local nodes and the guidelines that promote a safe and inclusive space, such as the code of coexistence approved in January 2025. We’ve also added a “Getting Started” section to support new participants, and activated a donations option as part of our strategy to diversify funding sources and work toward greater long-term sustainability.
Newsletter
[edit]Since 2023, we’ve been sending out the Wikiesfera Newsletter during the last week of each month to keep our community informed about upcoming events and current developments in the Wikimedia Movement. We also include summaries of recent activities and details about our weekly meetings, so that anyone interested can join when it’s most convenient for them.
In 2024, we began using MailChimp as our distribution platform, which has allowed for more efficient database management (with over 1,000 subscribers to date) and better tracking of metrics to assess the reach and reception of each issue.
All the information shared in the newsletter is also published on the Wikiesfera blog under the newsletter category, ensuring it remains accessible to those who aren’t subscribed and making it easier to share through other channels.
Social Media
[edit]Since July 2024, Wikiesfera has maintained an active presence on four social media platforms: Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. In January 2025, we opened a new profile on Bluesky and stopped posting on Twitter (X) due to various changes on the platform: the increase in hate speech, harassment of Wikipedia and its communities, and public statements by its owner, Elon Musk, contrary to the values of the Wikimedia Movement. We also evaluated the possibility of closing the Facebook profile, in response to Mark Zuckerberg's decisions not to intervene in the face of hate speech on Meta platforms. Finally, we decided to keep it active with automatic posts from Instagram.
As of June 2025, all active platforms have seen steady growth in the number of followers.
| June 2025 | |
|---|---|
| 1.271 | |
| 459 | |
| 654 | |
| Bluesky | 171 |
| TOTAL | 2.555 |
Communication efforts have focused on Instagram and LinkedIn, where we have strengthened the project's visual identity through more polished and consistent posts. In May, we launched the #MujeresRelevantes series on Instagram, aimed at sharing biographies created during our edit-a-thons, with special emphasis on those that include freely licensed images available on Wikimedia Commons.
Additionally, Wikiesfera’s reach has expanded thanks to the support and promotion of our collaborations by allied institutions and individuals, such as Medialab Matadero, EnClave Cultura, and the Teatro de la Zarzuela.
Press Clipping
[edit]
Since its creation in 2015, Wikiesfera has been featured in over 380 pieces across more than 200 local, national, and international media outlets, including print press, radio, podcasts, television, and video. All of this coverage is compiled in our press clipping, which we update regularly.
Among the most recent examples of growing interest in our work is an article published on the back cover of El País titled Patricia Horrillo, from Wikiesfera: “It’s been three years since Cristina Fallarás told me: we should all leave Twitter,” offering an in-depth look at the origins and evolution of digital spaces from a feminist perspective.
Our journey has also led to articles published in Público, where Patricia Horrillo authored two pieces: the opinion article Why Elon Musk Can’t Buy Wikipedia (And Why That Bothers Him), and the analysis report From Digital Utopia to Techno-Feudalism: The Fight for a Free Internet, which not only provides a historical view of the evolution of the Internet, but also explains the importance of free knowledge spaces such as Wikipedia or the Internet Archive.
Below you can find the detailed list of the 73 pieces published between July 2024 and June 2025, categorized by format: newspapers and digital media (52), radio and podcasts (11), and television and video (10).

Governance and Funding
[edit]Governance
[edit]During this period, Wikiesfera has consolidated its organizational structure and internal governance mechanisms, strengthening the model we have been developing since the formal establishment of the association. We believe in participatory, feminist, and critical governance that prioritizes transparency, care, and the sustainability of the community. We remain accountable to the Council of Wise Women, composed of thirteen women with extensive experience on Wikipedia and active involvement in Wikiesfera, who continue to approve our strategic and organizational plans, as well as our periodic activity and financial reports.
In January 2025, we took an important step by approving our own Code of coexistence, which complements the Safe Spaces Policy already in place, reinforcing our commitment to well-being, safety, and respect in all the spaces in which we engage. We also care for our communication channels, promoting active participation and keeping our Meta and Spanish Wikipedia pages updated, where we document our activities, reports, and calls to action.
Funding
[edit]In 2025, Wikiesfera received for the first time the full amount requested from the Wikimedia Foundation, marking a significant step forward in consolidating our organizational structure. This support has allowed us to improve the distribution of work, slightly strengthen our small core team (2 people at 20 hours/week; 1 person at 10 hours/week; and 2 people at 5 hours/week), and continue developing our activities with greater stability.
However, the funding remains insufficient to cover the group’s actual needs. Despite executing 100% of the allocated budget, much of the work still relies on the voluntary involvement of the core team. This situation reflects both the team’s commitment and the urgency of moving toward fairer and more sustainable funding models.
As part of our long-term sustainability strategy, we have begun applying for grants from various organizations and public institutions (still pending resolution). In addition, we have set up a donations section on our website to diversify our funding sources and reduce our exclusive reliance on institutional grants.
