Wikimania 2022 Festival in Esino Lario is an in-person regional event taking place August 13th and 14th in Esino Lario, a small mountain village which already hosted Wikimania in 2016.

Esino Lario, Italy. Esino Lario is a small mountain village over Lake Como in the Province of Lecco. It is at around 2 hours from Milan; it is connected by train from Milan to the station Varenna (around 1 hour) and by bus from Varenna to Esino (around 30 minutes). It is venue that will welcome wikipedians and wikimedians and it has services that can conveniently host our event. Wikimania online 2022 is also a nice change to organise again something in Esino Lario and to bring back memories of a challenging but also extremely collaborative experience.

Holidays in Italy. Monday August 15th is Ferragosto, a national holiday in Italy. In August many industries and services in cities are closed and people traditionally take their holidays in this period. Wikimania online takes place in 2022 in a period of vacation in Italy and therefore we propose to gather in the Esino Lario, where there are already events planned and we can enjoy the holidays together in the refreshing mountain weather.

A light program of conferences, gatherings and events. The festival in Esino Lario will last 2 days with a light program of conferences, gatherings and events. The goal is to enjoy an in-person event during Wikimania, to discuss and exchange among participants and to bring back Wikimania to Esino Lario. Wikipedians and wikimedians will take advantage of the local program of events taking place during the holidays of Ferragosto and they will have the change to attend the online international conferences in a pleasant location. Furthermore some local conferences and a workshop for children will be organised in Esino Lario during the week-end.

If you are planning to distribute funds to community members, such as by running a local scholarship program, please provide additional detail on how you will organize this process.
We expect participants to cover their individual costs. Wikimedia Italia can provide a grant to participants which contribute activity to the event; the association already has a microgrant program and the possibility to ask for rapid grants which are below 300 euro (we expect the costs in Esino Lario for the project to be below this amount). The selection process will be managed by Wikimedia Italia. We need to explore the possibility for participants coming from other countries in Europe to apply to their local chapter or to receive support from other chapters.

As a regional event, we need to explore the interest of participants from other European countries to attend the event.

Budget[edit]

Esino Lario is a location where we can take advantage of an established network and a series of existing services at a reasonable price.

We expect participants to book directly their accommodation and to manage their transport. We will collect information about the attendees to plan coffee breaks and to support the organisation of the events in the evenings.

We want to enrich the program of Esino Lario evening events with country music, because we trust the country music evening during Wikimania 2016 is a nice memory for many people who attended it. It sounds bizarre but it was actually an incredibly inclusive, diverse and fun event.
