Abstract

This proposal aims to describe Amical Wikimedia's approach to educational wikiprojects developed with Catalan universities since the academic year 2009/2010. Over almost a decade, these initiatives have collaborated in shifting the academic stance towards Wikipedia and its sister projects from purely sceptical opinions to a wide acceptance, willingness to participate, and the consideration of the Wikimedia projects as effective tools for teaching and educational innovation.

Amical's bottom-up strategy in educational collaborations will be detailed and an overview of good practices and lessons learnt will be delivered. Furthermore, results displaying both the quantitative and qualitative evolution of eduwiki initiatives in the Catalan university sector will be shared and opened for discussion, since a noticeable improvement has been detected when a third actor -university libraries- has been incorporated in these endeavours.

How does your proposal add knowledge to the international community in Wikimedia and education?

This proposal intends to present the knowledge and experience gathered after almost a decade developing eduwiki initiatives in several Catalan universities, which might be used as a reference or model for other communities or educational institutions willing to pursue similar initiatives.

Who is the intended ideal audience for the topic?

University professors, university departments for the educational quality, and other complementary educational services.
